Lollapalooza has come a long way since its 90s days of touring the nation with a lineup of alternative rock and grunge bands. Love or hate the changes they’ve made, this four-day Chicago festival now attracts over 180 bands from every genre imaginable – yes, including plenty of mainstream and pop artists – and more fans than ever. But that’s the beauty of Lolla. Music fans of all kinds and all ages are guaranteed to find something they like here! And if they don’t, well, they can still go check out some of Chicago’s best food vendors, shopping, interactive areas, photo ops, comedy, nonprofits, and more. It’s all part of the Lolla experience.

With Ariana Grande headlining this year’s Lollapalooza, the festival might be more pop-centric than ever, but there’s still plenty of rock, hip-hop, electronic, and even country music to choose from. Here’s a look at the 2019 Lollapalooza lineup

Ariana Grande – Sunday

Look, you might not be a fan of Ariana Grande yet, but just try listening to her last two albums – Sweetener and Thank U, Next – and not getting into it. Her single “7 Rings” is about to go 5x platinum in the US right now. Her sexy singles have made her the reigning queen of pop, and she’s touring the country this year with a stop at Lollapalooza along the way. If her background dancers and pink-and-purple-hued shows are anything to go by, fans are in for a treat at her festival performance. Yes, expect crowds of screaming teenage fangirls, but don’t be surprised if you get caught up in the excitement too!

Childish Gambino – Friday

This versatile actor-turned-musician has been making waves with his funky hip-hop and R&B hits over the past few years. His single “Redbone” is so ear-catchingly smooth that it won him a Grammy and it’s easily a fan favorite track. He followed it up with “This is America” and “V. 3005” along with summertime vibey hits like “Feels Like Summer” and “Summertime Magic.” You’ll definitely want to watch this talented, socially aware, hip-hop artist (also known as Donald Glover) as he performs these groove-worthy songs. He was a real hit at Bonnaroo this year. And yeah, you can bet he’s gonna play “Redbone” last.

Twenty-One Pilots – Saturday

This “Stressed Out” duo is known for their quirky, often eerie, yet oh-so-sing-along-able hits. They’re sort of a rap-pop-rock-indie-electronic hybrid of a band, so yeah, perfect for Lollapalooza! “Ride” and “Heathens” are two other singles you probably know from the radio, their albums Blurry Face and Trench, and the soundtrack to the movie Suicide Squad. Get ready to stand beside some guy who knows ALL the words!

The Strokes – Thursday

If you came to Lollapalooza looking for some real rock music, then don’t miss The Strokes. At the very least, you must go see them perform their biggest hit, “Last Nite.” Sure, they haven’t released an album in a few years, but the hits are still there. With roots in garage, indie, and punk rock, real guitar aficionados will appreciate seeing The Strokes play live. Up until May 2019, they hadn’t performed a show together in two years, so Lolla is sort of a reunion for them! Big fans are excited to see them back together, especially in a festival atmosphere!

Tame Impala – Friday

Their rampant festival hopping over the past few years is a testament to just how much fans dig them. Tame Impala is an electronic, multi-instrument, psychedelic project out of Australia. Kevin Parker is the leader of Tame Impala, providing the vocals and playing the drums, but he hits the stage alongside members of the band Pond, also out of Australia. They were a hit at Coachella and they’re heading to the UK and Canada for more music festivals this summer too. Because of the psychedelic influence, expect lots of groovy reverb and fuzz in songs like “Elephant,” “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” and “The Less I Know The Better.”

Flume – Sunday

Even if you haven’t heard the name, you’ve definitely heard the songs. This Aussie DJ puts a dance-y, electronic, fun twist on songs that you just know will get the Lolla crowds vibing (or however you’re supposed to dance at a festival). “Never Be Like You” and “You & Me” are his most popular songs but you’ll know them when you hear them. This one’s for the electronic fans!

J Balvin – Saturday

Get ready for some reggaeton! J Balvin is a Colombian singer known for his worldwide hit “I Like It Like That” featuring Cardi B and Bad Bunny and “Say My Name” with David Guetta and Bebe Rexha. He’s also collaborated with Selena Gomez, Sean Paul and Tyga to make some truly catchy stuff too, always representing the Latino community. Expect a lot of dancing when he gets up on stage! J Balvin was the first Latino artist to take the main stage at Coachella and he’s the first to headline Lollapalooza. If his stuff can’t get you moving, nothing can!

The Chainsmokers – Thursday

This DJ duo has had enough viral radio tunes that you’re sure to be singing along with most everything they play. With electronic pop sounds and mega hits like “Closer” and “Something Just Like This,” expect them to attract a huge crowd at Lolla. They just worked with 5 Seconds of Summer to produce “Who Do You Love” and Bebe Rexha to make “Call You Mine.” They’ve also been touring all over the world this summer, from Vegas clubs to Singapore and China to Ultra Music Festival in Australia.

Kacey Musgraves, Lil Wayne, Janelle Monae, Hozier, and so many more…

Country star Kacey Musgraves racked up a million Grammys and she’s all over the festival circuit this year. Lil Wayne is, well, in his own words, “the best rapper alive.” And if you haven’t heard singer-songwriter-rapper Janelle Monae’s hot beats yet, just google “Pynk” and have a listen. As for Hozier, he’ll take you to church.

Other artists we can’t wait for? 21 Savage, Maggie Rogers, Death Cab for Cutie, Tenacious D, and Alesso. But there are OH SO MANY more! Just check out this year’s Lollapalooza lineup poster!
