Now that the 2016 Music Festival Lineups are beginning to surface, we decided to compile some highlights of each one to help you decide which festival tickets you’ll splurge on this year. Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, commonly known as the Coachella Festival, is held every year at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Starting off as a single-day festival back in ‘99, Coachella has successfully grown to hosting two weekends of music with their famously diverse line-up. With performers in genres ranging from hip-hop, to rock, to EDM, and folk, Coachella continues to be one of the premier music festivals in the country. Here are 7 Reasons to Attend Coachella 2016.
Reunions: Guns N’ Roses + LCD Soundsystem
If there wasn’t already enough hype regarding the release of the Coachella line-up, the announcement that Guns N’ Roses would be (partially) reuniting on stage sent fans into even more of a panic to snag those coveted festival passes. It’s been confirmed that Axl Rose and Slash will in fact be sharing the stage for the first time since 1993’s Use Your Illusion tour. Though the questions surrounding Izzy Stradlin and Frank Ferrer’s attendance for the Coachella performances are still unanswered, we will definitely see Duff McKagan share the stage with the two other original Guns N’ Roses members. We can only hope that the Guns N’ Roses reunion at Coachella will lead to new material or possibly a tour. Only time will tell if these shows are merely for nostalgic purposes, or if they are signaling the beginning of a new Guns N’ Roses era.
The Best EDM Line-up Without Being a Purely EDM Festival
EDM has increasingly worked its way into mainstream music, which is directly reflected in this year’s EDM packed Coachella line-up. This year, Calvin Harris, the highest paid DJ in 2015, will take the slot for third headliner. Fellow big EDM acts Jack U, Major Lazer, and Zedd dominate the line-up, leading us to believe that Coachella will be two very dance-filled weekends (and isn’t that what you came for?). For years, the EDM-focused Sahara tent has held some pretty legendary dance parties. Now, the Coachella grounds will also hold the Yuma tent, which will be the home for more trance/house EDM acts. Performers in the Yuma tent include Sasha and Matthew Dear.
Sia, in Her First Live Performance Since SNL
With the exception of Sia’s performance on Saturday Night Live this past year (which was pretty incredible), her performance at Coachella will be her first appearance on the live stage since 2001. This is HUGE, especially considering that the festival takes place just months after the highly anticipated release of This Is Acting, an album composed of songs written by Sia, for other artists. We’re thrilled that Sia is stepping out from behind the curtain of being just an industry songwriter in order to see her showcase those powerhouse vocals live. Sia’s set is definitely one to see.
The Cool New Sound System Despacio
Sound aficionados, tech nerds, and fellow lovers of the quality speaker systems, behold: Despacio. LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy has been working with the members of 2manydjs and sound engineer John Klett for the past several years to create Despacio. Meaning “slow” in Spanish, Despacio is a massive production, featuring a 50k watt, 11.5- feet tall speaker system that puts the music before the DJ. The DJ booth will be set up behind the crowd, so that the fans can focus primarily on the sound, rather than the DJ. Coachella will be Despacio’s home for both weekends, and we’re not sure which sets will feature it, but audiences are in for a real treat when the system will be utilized.
Fierce Females Invade the Boys Club: Courtney Barnett, Halsey, Ibeyi, Alessia Cara
Due to Coachella being a primarily alternative, EDM, and rock-infused festival, there have been many years where the lineup severely lacked in female artists. This year is a blatant and encouraging exception. In addition to bigger acts Ellie Goulding and Sia, smaller female artists who have only recently found their fame in strides will be performing at Coachella, which was formerly known as a “boys club.” Out of the incredible lineup, we suggest heading over to witness Courtney Barnett’s thrilling guitar solos and laid-back vocals, 18-year-old Alessia Cara’s soul infused pop, and the ethereal beauty of Ibeyi, a true sister act.
Vince Staples, the Best to Come out of L.A Since Kendrick
Besides Kendrick Lamar, some would say that newcomer Vince Staples is the best rapper to come out of California we’ve seen in awhile. Much like his predecessor, Staples’ debut record Summertime 08 largely discusses racism, gang violence, and the economic divide in America. Though it will be some pretty heavy material for the Coachella crowd, we think it’s cool that audiences will be exposed to his gritty, raw, and extremely skilled delivery of a very important message. Joining Staples in the hip-hop roster at Coachella 2016 is ASAP Rocky, Ice Cube, and Rae Sremmurd.
Chris Stapleton, who Snagged Three Grammy Nods in 2015
If you haven’t heard of Chris Stapleton, you’ve likely heard the words he’s written, via the voices of Kenny Chesney, Darius Rucker, and George Strait. Chris Stapleton is one of the most prolific country songwriters we have today, and he’s well on his way to reshaping the country music industry. Just a week before November’s CMA awards, Stapleton released his debut record Traveller. The record shot to the No. 1 spot a week after the awards, due in part to Stapleton’s drunk songs duet with Justin Timberlake. Soon after, Stapleton received three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, which set him in the ranks with Kendrick Lamar, former country singer Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd. Except for a few shows down south, Coachella will be one of the few opportunities you can catch the rising star in country music this year.
