At first glance, the Coachella 2013 Lineup can seem a little disappointing:
But after researching some of these performers, I’ve found that there are many hidden gems in the lineup that are well worth the investment in the Coachella Music Festival. The headliners, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, The Stone Roses, and Blur, are expected to rock the stage with legendary valor. But in my opinion, the heart of the festival lies with the up and coming artists you may have not heard of. Instead of taking time away from the stage during the smaller acts, give a listen to these skilled musicians whose sounds resonate and are alike to some of the bands we all know and love.
If you like Coachella 2013 sub-headliner Yeah Yeah Yeahs:
Check out the Palma Violets and Japandroids on Friday, April 12th & 19th. The Japandroids are a garage punk duo from Vancouver whose fame is driven by the energetic, empowered vocalist Brian King and drummer David Prowse.
The Palma Violets have a rowdy angst which makes their live performances captivating to audiences. Much like the edgy-art performance of Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O, the Palma Violets deliver with a purpose.
If you like the indie rock/ alternative sound of Coachella 2013 sub-headliner The Lumineers:
Be sure to catch The Airborne Toxic Event and The Gaslight Anthem onSunday, April 14th & 21st.The Airborne Toxic Event is a band just about everyone can enjoy. With stunning harmonic vocals, an enchanting violinist, and spirited percussion, The Airborne Toxic Event has mastered a sound you’ll be sorry to miss.
The Gaslight Anthem has attracted a following due to their soulful punk rock, a sound which not only moves audiences, but moves players Alex Levine, Benny Harowitz, and Alex Rosamilia. Want to see a band raptured by their own sound and lyrics? Don’t miss The Gaslight Anthem at Coachella 2013.
If you like the indie electric sound of Coachella 2013 sub-headliner Passion Pit:
Make a point to see performances by Portugal. The Man., a band which has explored just about every genre of sound while maintaining a fresh and appealing edge to their music. The mixing of rock, electric, and soulful vocals has kept Portugal. The Man on the watch for up and coming artists.
If you like Coachella 2013 sub-headliner Band of Horses:
You will also want to see an awe inspiring performance by fellow sub-headliner (though lesser known), The XX. An indie pop band from across the pond, The XX has paved their way by delivering live shows which have exceeded an audiences expectations by ten-fold. Much like artists Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky, The XX showcases a movement of sound which delivers musical ingenuity at its finest.
The Neighbourhood & The Shouting Matches, Hidden Gems in the Coachella 2013 Lineup
The Neighbourhood is an indie rock/ hip-hop talent, combining characteristics from so many genres that their performances feel like a walk through what we all love about music. Refined and complicated, The Neighbourhood is a band you’ll want to watch for the experience of seeing something you’ve never seen before.
The Shouting Matches is a blues band, comprised of Brian Moen, Phil Cook, and Justin Vernon. If the name Justin Vernon doesn’t ring a bell, does Bon Iver? Justin Vernon, lead vocalist of Bon Iver, formed The Shouting Matches as his blues band project. I don’t know if you’ll ever have a chance to see Justin Vernon in a more intimate frame, so don’t miss your chance to see The Shouting Matches at Coachella 2013!
