David Byrne Will Tour in Support of New Solo Album
This week, music icon and former Talking Heads leader David Byrne announced that he will be embarking on his “most ambitious” tour since the shows that were captured for the concert film Stop Making Sense. This will mark David Byrne’s solo return to the stage for the first time in nine years, but he hasn’t taken a total break from touring, as he did a joint stint with St. Vincent back in 2013 in support of their collaborative project Love This Giant. You can check out David Byrne’s tweet announcing his 2018 concert tour below.
A small # of east coast shows! We’ll be doing some new songs, & many others that will, I assume, be familiar. I’m excited. This is the most ambitious show I’ve done since the shows that were filmed for Stop Making Sense, so fingers crossed. Info @ https://t.co/B8YgcnekRv pic.twitter.com/ehQ41X1MyD

Byrne also detailed a challenging, yet deeply inspired visual approach for the shows, centered on his band using mobile instruments. “With everyone mobile, I realized the stage could be completely clear. If we could have the monitors in our ears, the amps off-stage and the lights up high, then we had the possibility of a completely empty space,” he told Brooklyn Vegan.
In addition to the announcement of a 2018 solo tour, David Byrne fans have something else to look forward to. Shortly after Byrne announced his upcoming tour which promised both old and “some new songs”, details from a new project surfaced on Amazon. On the artist’s page is a listing referring to the album title American Utopia. This would be Byrne’s first album since Love This Giant with St. Vincent.
We’re not surprised by this news, as an upcoming concert tour often means a new album on the way. The listing for American Utopia has an album release date of March 9, 2018 via Nonesuch Records. Byrne previously worked with the label on two live albums, his rock musical Here Lies Love, and his 2004 album Grown Backwards. Not to mention, Byrne mentioned in a Reddit AMA this past May that a solo project will arrive “early next year”.
David Byrne has yet to confirm his new album title, a release date, or much else. We’re hoping that Byrne extends his just announced tour before the end of 2017. You can check out the scheduled dates for David Byrne’s 2018 Solo Tour below.
