Five Video Friday | Best Music Collaborations

Run DMC and Aerosmith Live When it comes to a music performance, the same rule applies: Two is better than one.

This week’s playlist features some of the best collaborative performances on YouTube. Ranging across genres, these collaborative performances feature some of the greatest musicians of all time. From all-star guitarists, to legendary jazz musician icons—these videos prove that live on stage, just about anything can happen. Just from watching these videos at home or at work we can see the magic that only comes when talent meets even more talent.

1. Kings of Leon w/ special guest Eddie Vedder- Lollapalooza ’07

Kings of Leon welcomes “good friend” Eddie Vedder onto the stage for the last song of their set, “Slow Night, So Long”. Vedder comes out with two tambourines in his hands and takes to stage left of Jared Followill. By the end of a song filled with zealous tambourine playing (be sure to notice the moment where Vedder completely destroys his tambourine), raucous drumming, and near perfect vocals, Vedder and the Followill’s are drenched with rock-star glow. Though Eddie Vedder won’t be joining Kings of Leon on their current “Mechanical Bull” tour, don’t miss out on your chance to see one of the greatest rock bands of all time, buy cheap Kings of Leon tickets now!

2. B.B King and John Mayer Live @ Guitar Center’s King of the Blues ’09

One of the YouTube comments on this video is “it’s like seeing Mufasa and Simba in the living world”. Need I say more? Not only is John Mayer a rock alternative musician, he is incredibly talented at blues guitar as well. Here is a short snippet of John Mayer improving with the legendary B.B King, one of his musical inspirations. At the beginning, Mayer playfully banters with the audience, but King quickly jumps in and says “keep it up, I’ll walk right out.” The two carry on the banter through their guitar riffs and dirty-blues vocals. This video is truly capturing talent at its most raw. John Mayer is currently on tour for his “Born and Raised” album. Cheap John Mayer tickets are still available for purchase!

3. Linkin Park feat. Jay-Z

When it comes to music collaborations, there’s no way we can go without mentioning Collision Course, where Linkin Park’s incredible vocals and rock rhythms met Jay-Z’s rap and hip/hop expertise. Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington often shocks Jay-Z with his incredible voice, while the hip-hop legend leads the band into a classic beats from “Dirt Off Your Shoulders” and “Encore”. These two performers come together so seamlessly—and I’m not sure there has been an act to match. Though Linkin Park won’t be joining in on any upcoming shows, Jay-Z is currently on tour for the album Magna Carta Holy Grail. Cheap Jay-Z tickets are still available for the shows coming up this winter!

4.  Tony Bennett feat. Lady Gaga- “The Lady is a Tramp”

The performance chemistry between these two is remarkable. Bennett brings out the bluesy, classic side of Gaga, one that is often masked (figuratively and literally) by her theatrical stage presence. But in this video, Lady Gaga showcases the undeniable vocal talent she possess while simultaneously showing homage to the incredible Tony Bennett. This collaboration has been performed multiple times, but in order to get the full affect of this collaboration, I feel as if the music video is the best one to put forward.

5.  Run DMC and Aerosmith, “Walk This Way” on MTV Live

Did you think I could forget one of the most entertaining and energetic collaborative performances of all time? Not only is the song a crowd favorite, but this live performance is from back in the day when MTV was based upon these unique and exciting musical endeavors. In this case, when rappers Run DMC meet rockers Aerosmith, something truly spectacular happens. Enjoy this blast from the past, and check the TickPick blog next Friday for another 5 Video Playlist!
