Artist Spotlight: G-Eazy - “When It’s Dark Out” Tour 2016

January 20, 2016 by

Twenty-six year old Gerald Earl Gillum, known as G-Eazy, is living a dream that has been in the making for the past ten years of his life. The Oakland-bred rapper/producer has toured the U.S. and Europe. His artist collaborations include the likes of DJ Carnage, Borgore, A$AP Ferg, Too $hort, Pia Mia, Big Sean – the list goes on. Most notably, he has created an iconic style and brand image for himself as a celebrity figure in the hip-hop world.

So how did it all start?

G-Eazy’s mixtape “The Tipping Point”, released while he was a sophomore at Loyola University.Gerald made music a primary focus in his life when he was just sixteen years old. After growing up in the Bay Area, he moved to New Orleans to attend Loyola University, where he majored in Music Industry. His decision proved to be fruitful; Loyola’s music industry program connected him with classmates that are still a part of his journey today. On-again, off-again beau Devon Baldwin served as the angelic-sounding female feature on many of his tracks, and she starred in a few of his music videos. Christoph Andersson is the producer behind much of G-Eazy’s repertoire, blending G’s hard hitting verses with a haunting ambient sound. Before he even graduated from Loyola, he managed to get a brief opening slot on Drake and Lil’ Wayne’s tour in 2010. While he didn’t earn a cent from these performances, the stint certainly paid off in other ways, as he still maintains relationships with the two iconic rappers. Not to mention, the massive exposure helped to launch his music career post-graduation.

G-Eazy and Devon Baldwin in their college years. With a Bachelor of Arts degree under his belt, G set out to release more music with a curated sound. He dropped his mixtape Endless Summer in August 2011, which pitched G-Eazy as a modern-day James Dean with vices for weed and attractive young women. His sound was playful, his lyrics were clever, and his charisma was undeniable. His breakout track “Runaround Sue” sampled Dion’s song of the same name with a 1960s-inspired music video that made a killing on YouTube (the video has since been removed due to copyright claims from Dion’s label, but you can still watch it on Vimeo).

G-Eazy’s 2011 Mixtape “Endless Summer”The latter part of 2012 saw G-Eazy performing on the Van’s Warped Tour and joining rapper Hoodie Allen on the Excellent Adventure Tour. After returning from life on the road, he didn’t skip a beat and released his first independent album “Must Be Nice.”G-Eazy’s first independent album “Must Be Nice”The self-produced album found a spot at #3 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart with no major label support. RCA Records may not have had confidence in G-Eazy back in 2008, but six years later, they certainly took notice of his constant progression and artistic growth.

G-Eazy in 2012Fast-forward a few years and G-Eazy has released two albums with RCA Records, headlined his own tours, performed at countless music festivals as well as on Late Night TV. G-Eazy’s work ethic certainly paved the way for his grassroots success. Whether it was partnering with Uber for cross-promotion for his shows, entering Spotify’s emerging artist contest, or hosting secret listening parties for his fans in cities across the country, G-Eazy has always carefully calculated his next move.Photographer Grady Brannan has played a large part in the shaping of G’s public image. Back in the day, Gerald could be spotted wearing flower-print button-downs or varsity letter jackets, but his style has certainly evolved in the past few years. Grady’s photos depict G in stark black and white puffing on a joint, pounding back whiskey, getting lined up at the barber shop, or performing in sold-out arenas. The look, the music, the personality – it’s infectious. Young men show up to his conerts with the same signature haircut and leather jackets; his female fans will stop at nothing for a chance to hang out after hours on his tour bus.

G-Eazy’s shows have become more massive with each run. He’s already on the road promoting his latest album “When It’s Dark Out” with co-headliner A$AP Ferg and openers Marc E. Bassy and Nef the Pharoah. The tour kicked off in Portland Oregon on January 6th and will continue across the U.S., Australia, and Europe. The tour is nearly sold out, but a few stops still have a few tickets remaining. Whether you’re a long-time G fan or have just recently hopped on the bandwagon, this monumental tour is certainly not one to miss for hip-hop fans.
