[sc name=”WE Fest”]
If you really don’t plan on camping at WE Fest, then yes, you can stay at a hotel and travel back and forth to the festival. While the WE Fest grounds at Soo Pass Ranch are situated somewhat in the middle of nowhere, you can still find accommodation options in the nearby town of Detroit Lakes, including a few local hotels. But remember, you’ll need to act fast because this is a very rural area that becomes absolutely flooded with visitors on that first week of August! In fact, it may already be too late! (More on that below.)

First things first, be sure to check out WE Fest’s interactive lodging map (shown above). They’ve done half the work for you by displaying the closest hotels and Airbnbs to the festival, including the nightly rates and links to hotel booking sites. It’s pretty cool.
Second, expect hotel prices to double around the time of WE Fest.
As you can see, typical prices for the Detroit Lakes area in early August range from $123 to $146 per night, but during WE Fest they shoot up to $234 to $278. (And after checking, they’re more like $290.) As for Airbnb options available during that weekend, there’s barely anything left.
(The Few) hotels in Detroit Lakes
We aren’t exaggerating. The options are slim. There are about 15 hotels and motels (at maximum) and three campsites/RV parks (but in that case, why wouldn’t you be camping?). And about four of those options are pretty far from town.
The hotels available in Detroit Lakes are your basic, middle-of-the-road or budget American brands, so don’t expect anything too fancy! You can choose from the usual suspects – there’s a Quality Inn, Holiday Inn, Fairfield Inn, Country Inn & Suites, and AmericInn by Wyndham. There’s also an America’s Best Value Inn & Suites and a Budget Host Inn. Hey, you’re not going to be spending a ton of time in the hotel room and you’re probably just looking for a place to rest your head, right?
If you are trying to turn this festival weekend into a vacation, after a quick browse, we also found the Best Western Premier Lodge on the Lake, which looks like the most luxurious option. It’s got a relaxing lakefront beach, pool, spa, and bar. They are (were?) taking special reservations for WE Fest which required a four-night minimum stay as well as prepayment in full. They’re number one in Detroit Lakes on TripAdvisor though!
There are a few more off-the-radar, local places too, including Lakes Inn, Edgewater by EVRentals, Breezy Shores Resort, Country Campground, Holiday Haven Motel, Viking Resort Motel, and Pine to Palm Motel. Most are located right on the lake. They don’t have much of an online presence, so it’s possible they still have some availability – you may need to make some phone calls to book! You can see them here on TripAdvisor or here on Google.
All of these Detroit Lakes hotel options are located about 3.5 miles away from WE Fest, which is about a 10-minute drive away according to WE Fest’s Lodging Map. (Be sure to check the exact distance yourself!) After those hotels run out of availability, your next-best options are located about 19 miles away from the festival – in the town of Perham, MN – a distance you probably don’t want to drive after staying out past midnight at WE Fest for concerts each night. But there is a Super 8 there that’s only a 34-minute drive away…
The Bad News…
Many of these hotels are already booked full. Actually, the only hotel at which we were able to successfully find a reservation for online (for the Thursday to Sunday of WE Fest weekend) was the Detroit Lakes Holiday Inn at rates anywhere between $277 and $290 per night. Ummm…
Ready, Set, Go!
Alternatives? You could start browsing hotel options in Perham and look for a reliable designated driver. (Maybe if you buy their festival ticket for the weekend, they’ll agree to it?) FYI, those rooms are going fast too! After that, the closest hotel room that TripAdvisor can find is in Fargo, North Dakota about a 56-minute drive from WE Fest. The closest room that Hotels.com recommends is in Wadena, Minnesota, which is about the same driving distance in the other direction. If you haven’t made plans yet, you better get on it…
The demand is real. Camping isn’t looking so bad now is it? Check out those options here.
