Jennifer Lopez’s move to Las Vegas for an upcoming 20-show residency began with the release of her latest album, A.K.A., in 2012. A legitimately terrible music experience, the record was her worst performing album ever. The album’s only successful single, Booty, became more known for its provocative lyrics and accompanying music video, then for actually being an enjoyable song.

The album’s disappointing sales was a blow to an artist who has struggled to stay relevant to a younger audience. “It’s a new generation of party people” she sings on On the Floor ft. Pitbull on her previous album, Love?. A new generation, it’s important to note, which she is not a part of.

While continuing to create music, Lopez has increasingly sought other platforms of exposure, and has often found success in them. In January, she co-produced and starred in The Boy Next Door, a film about a student who has an affair with his teacher (played by J. Lo). While receiving very critical reviews, the film was one of Lopez’s greatest commercial successes, making more than $45 million in profit on its opening weekend. The very next month, she released her latest fragrance, JLuxe, and in March, she lent her voice to the animated DreamWorks film, Home.

On top of all of that, she is continuing to run her line of weight-loss products, releasing a clothing collection at Kohls, finishing up the last season of American Idol, as well as producing and starring in Shades of Blue, a crime drama from NBC.

Interestingly, the trailer for Shades of Blue focuses more on J. Lo than it does on the plot of the show:

All of this demonstrates that J. Lo’s brand extends far beyond music, and her decision to set up a residency in a desert town where former stars go to make bank before they retire is a continuation of the idea that she can pull on her reservoir of fame from the 90s and early 2000s to help her stay relevant in ways that may not include creating hit songs.

Nevertheless, it takes two to tango, and The Planet Hollywood Resort’s decision to sign Lopez for 20 shows at an exorbitant $400,000+ per show is part of a larger effort by Las Vegas hotels to change its image by attracting pop artists that can appeal to a younger audience (read: successful techies on vacation from Silicon Valley). Britney Spears’s and Mariah Carey’s residencies are further examples of this.
