Will fans get to see a joint tour between Kanye West, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney this year? Let’s examine the evidence:
1.) Recent Collaborations
Not only is Kanye West’s and Rihanna’s recent collaboration with Paul McCartney killing it (FourFiveSeconds is currently #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Hip Hop Charts), it could also very well become the basis of a 2015 tour, which I am prohibitively calling the FourFiveSeconds Tour until further notice.
Historically, it has been a common (and successful) strategy for hip-hop artists to release a collaboration before making a co-headlining tour announcement. For examples, please see:
Eminem and Jay-Z’s Home & Home Tour (recent collab: Renegade)
Jay-Z & Justin Timberlake’s Legends of the Summer Tour (recent collabs: Holy Grail, Suit & Tie)
Eminem and Rihanna’s Monster Tour (recent collab: Monster)
Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne Tour (recent collab: Watch the Throne)
Make no mistake about it – there is a very good chance that the release of FourFiveSeconds was planned and that Rihanna and Kanye West will parlay the success of their hit single into a North American or even world stadium tour in 2015.
2.) It’s time
As you can see from the list above, not only have both Kanye and Rihanna done co-headlining tours with other artists – but those tours have revolved around one person in particular – friend and mentor Jay-Z. In an interview with Rap Radar’s Elliot Wilson Jay-Z had this to say on the importance of touring with other artists:
The notoriously shy Eminem only went on tour with Rihanna after his tour with Jay-Z. It’s impossible to say for sure, but I would be willing to bet that Jay’s mentality influenced Eminem and helped persuade him to do another joint tour, this time with Rihanna. And if that’s the case, it would be hard to imagine that Kanye isn’t feeling the same way after his and Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne tour, considering Yeezy and Hova’s close relationship.
3.) Rihanna “Accidentally” Leaked that Kanye West Will Tour in 2015
To benefit her charitable foundation, The CLF Foundation (which she started to honor her grandparents), Rihanna is auctioned off the Kanye West Tour experience, which includes “Two (2) VIP tickets in city of your choice to a Kanye West concert date on his upcoming 2015 tour.”
Spin Magazine was the first to report on the story, but they seem to have missed a crucial detail – the CLF Foundation also auctioned off VIP access to see Rihanna and Paul McCartney at upcoming shows. Keep in mind, Rihanna’s VIP package specifically states that she has a 2015 tour coming up, while McCartney’s page just mentions upcoming shows. Still, it seems a little too coincidental that both Rihanna, Kanye, and McCartney are auctioning off VIP appearances for charity to shows they haven’t scheduled yet. Throw in everything else, and I think this is pretty damning evidence.
4.) Paul McCartney is the most successful he’s been in decades
While Yeezy and Rihanna are certainly a far cry from his old band mates, they’re bringing him one thing he hasn’t experienced for a long time – the sweet smell of success. In fact, Paul McCartney hasn’t been popular for so long, that with FourFiveSeconds, he broke the world record for the greatest amount of time between top-ten songs. Seriously. The last time McCartney has put out a record this successful was in 1986, and believe it or not, some people are starting to forget who he is, as evidenced by these tweets that went viral:
After going from making music that no one listed to, to finally making music that everyone is listening to, I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul McCartney is ready to hop back on the bandwagon once again with Rihanna and Kanye West this summer.
Two weeks ago, Complex was sent the following image from an anonymous source:
It doesn’t have McCartney’s name on it, and it could easily be a hoax, but Complex claims that it comes from a reliable source.
Here’s the deal – just like Eminem’s 2014 Tour, which we correctly predicted before anyone else, none of these pieces of evidence are enough to stand up on their own merit, and if you look at them individually, it would be very easy to turn each point down as a coincidence. However, when you look at them all together, they add up to way more than the sum of their parts. I don’t know for sure if Kanye West, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney are going to tour together thus Spring/Summer. Some think only Kanye and Rihanna will tour. Most think we are making a lot of hype out of nothing. I guess only time will tell.
In the meantime, what do you think? Will Kanye West, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney tour in 2015? If so, where would you like to see them perform? Let us know in the comments!
