Long Time Net, Short Time Knick Jason Kidd Retires

Yesterday, long time Net, short time Knick Jason Kidd called it a career after 19 seasons. Kidd leaves the game a first ballot Hall of Famer, with two gold medals and a championship ring with Dallas Mavericks back in 2011. He also is second all time in both assists (11,842) and steals (2,559) to John Stockton. As a die-hard Nets fan from back in the days of Sherman Douglas and Jason Williams, Kidd was a talent that I had never seen before. I will always remember jumping out of my seat whenever Kidd would snag a rebound and run the break with Richard Jefferson and Kenyon Martin flanking him on either wing, eagerly awaiting a lob at the rim.

During his time as a Net, Kidd averaged 14.3 points, 9.2 assists, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. Of his 107 career triple doubles (third all-time), 61 of those came as a Net. Although never known for his shooting stroke as a Net, Kidd will surprisingly leave with the 3rd most three-point field goals made in league history as well. Without question the greatest Net of all time, it is a forgone conclusion that his number five jersey will be retired in Brooklyn in the coming years.

I will always be grateful for the back to back championships he led us to in his first two years. Unfortunately, the likes of pinball wizard Todd MacCulloch, a washed up Dikembe Mutombo, and (then rookie and now openly gay) Jason Collins attempted (and failed miserably) to guard Shaq and current NBA finalist Tim Duncan. Nonetheless, Kidd brought the Nets to the playoffs every year he was on the team, and up until this past season in Brooklyn, they had not reached the playoffs since his departure to Dallas.

Knicks fans will remember Kidd much differently than the now cross-town rival Nets. Kidd served as one of several crafty veterans on the oldest roster in NBA history. He spent his time meandering around the three-point line, shooting with success in his final regular season at 35%. On the defensive side, he proved to still have some of the quickest hands in the NBA, averaging 1.6 steals per game. However, Knicks fans will more likely remember his final 10 games of the postseason, where he failed to record a single point and the Knicks failed to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Kidd didn’t enter the league as a scorer, and he won’t be leaving as one either.
