It’s been nearly a year since a live event took place in the state of New York. At long last, live events are eligible to return at Madison Square Garden with fans at games of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers starting on February 23rd!

Per the state of New York, each venue must adhere to the following guidelines

  • 10% capacity limit in arenas and stadiums with pod seating
  • All staff and spectators receive a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of the event
  • Mandate face coverings, social distancing and temperature checks for all those in attendance
  • Mandate assigned, socially distanced seating
  • Collect contact information from all those in attendance to help inform contact tracing efforts
  • Meet enhanced air filtration, ventilation and purification standards
  • Ensure retail, food services and athletic activities abide by all state-issued guidance

Of all the guidelines, the negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of the event is most significant. New York is currently the only state requiring negative tests to attend live events, which may make things a bit more burdensome for those interested in attending events at Madison Square Garden.

MSG will accept a negative COVID-19 PCR test with matching government issued ID from any reputable testing provider. However, MSG has partnered with a few testing providers to ensure this process is as seamless and inexpensive as possible.

GoHealth

GoHealth is Northwell Health’s Urgent Care provider and has partnered with MSG Sports directly to help facilitate the pre-testing requirements. We have found that this is your best option for attending Knicks and Rangers games.

On their dedicated MSG page, you will find a handy chart which clearly outlines when you need to set up your virtual visit based on the game you are interested in attending.

During the virtual visit, you are asked basic intake questions and schedule your test on the specified date. This ensures a speedy process at the GoHealth facility, and you will receive your results through the Northwell Health-GoHealth patient portal in time for the game. The test is also covered by major insurance providers.

You can rest easy with GoHealth, knowing that you will be getting your results in time for the event. That hasn’t always been the case with other common testing providers, which is why we strongly recommend them for your testing needs for attending Knicks and Rangers games.

Vault Health

Vault Health is also partnered with MSG Sports to provide their simple, saliva-based COVID-19 at home test.

On their dedicated MSG page, you will find a handy chart which clearly outlines when you need to set up your virtual visit based on the game you are interested in attending.

The test is administered under video supervision by a medical expert and then needs to be returned that same day via UPS to Vault Health. Test results should then be available within 48-72 hours. This test may be reimbursable under the Cares Act as well.

While this is a nice option for the convenience of taking the test at home, you do run the risk of shipping delays due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, which could cause you to miss the event.

Rapid Test NYC

Finally, Rapid Test NYC has partnered with MSG Sports to provide a same day option for fans who, for one reason or another, were unable to schedule a test in the timeframes outlined with the other two providers.

On event days, they will be located near MSG at The Stewart Hotel (371 7th Ave) and tests will be available from 3:30pm to 8:30pm.

There are two particularly important factors to note here. First, there is limited capacity with these tests, so if you show up too close to game time you run the risk of there not being any available. Second, the test will cost you $250 and is not covered by insurance.

Unless money is not an issue for you, we strongly advise only using this option as a last resort.

Other MSG Re-Opening FAQs

Can you receive a refund if your PCR test comes back positive or you fail the temperature check?

  • Not exactly. If you are a season ticket holder refunds are available, but single game ticket purchasers through Ticketmaster or secondary ticket marketplaces are not eligible for refunds. However, if you purchase your tickets on TickPick and run into this issue, please reach out to our support team so we accommodate your request as best we can.

What else do I need to do prior to attending an event at MSG?

  • You will be subject to a temperature check upon arrival that must register below 100.4 degrees.
  • You must submit a health survey through the MSG Venue App 12 hours prior to the event.
