Meet Lizzo, the Flute Flexing Rap Singer Making No-Genre Music For Us All

UPDATE (1/30): After a phenomenal appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Lizzo has finally revealed her plans for 2019, and for the final resting home of her newest—and biggest single to date—”Juice“.

CUZ I LOVE YOUbilled as Lizzo’s official, full-length debut, will arrive April 19th via Nice Life/Atlantic. So far, “Juice” is the only known CUZ I LOVE YOU single, but we are confident she will drop at least one more single before the album release. Later in April, Lizzo will embark on a North American Tour, which includes a night at Brooklyn’s hottest new music venue. Not to mention sets at this year’s Coachella Music Festival.

Previously, Lizzo released 2015’s Big Grrrl Small World, and in 2016, the Coconut Oil EP. Though both releases were met with warm reception, there is no doubt that CUZ I LOVE YOU will mark Lizzo’s biggest gesture in the music world. Have you been sleeping on the prowess of Lizzo? Well, let us bring you in.

This bad grrrl has been around for awhile. But now that she is about to be very famous, we wanted to familiarize you with Lizzo, the flute flexing rap singer who makes music while being exactly who she is. With intoxicating fierceness, Lizzo is on a mission to make feel-good art for us all.

Some of you Instagrammers may have caught last year’s #FluteAndShoot challenge. Lizzo created a wave of flute flaunting, all inspired from her incredible live performances, where she famously flute and shoots—in other words, she drops it, knowing how hot she is. Yes. She slays it in the dance arena, too.

Lizzo found a huge break when asked to appear on Prince’s PLECTRUMELECTRUM (2014). This break fractured into a moment, with 2016’s Coconut Oil EP. With hits like “Good as Hell“, Lizzo won even more stage appearances, such as Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Late Show with David Letterman, and even a set at the VooDoo Music + Arts Fest, which featured even more of her flute prowess. In just a few short years, fans of Lizzo wondered if there was anything she couldn’t do. But more importantly, when the rest of the world was going to catch on.

Check out her latest and first CUZ I LOVE YOU single, “Juice“. The single arrived with the accompanying video—a throwback to 80s fitness instruction tapes and infomercials, but enhanced by Lizzo’s joyful glamour.

Sexy, confident, contagious. “Juice“, and many other Lizzo songs, just make us feel good. Much like Beyonce’s “Love on Top”, or Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”, “Juice” has us up on our feet, dancing to keep unhappiness at bay. Lines like “No, I’m not a snack at all/Look, baby, I’m the whole damn meal” and “If I’m shiny, everybody gonna shine” show Lizzo in a dominant place. She knows and loves herself. And we should too.

So far, “Juice” is the only single Lizzo has released since last Summer’s Boys, one of the better female empowerment anthems that were released at the time. With a danceable beat, dominant lyrics, guitar solos, “Boys” was an uplifting sign of things to come. So, could 2019 be the year of Lizzo?

Now, you can catch Lizzo on one of the many stops along her 2019 North American Tour, in addition to the 2019 Coachella Music Festival. Plus, we think it’s possible—if not likely—that Lizzo releases one of the best albums in 2019.
