Here, we celebrate and speculate this year’s best, upcoming album releases. From the long-awaited Rihanna LP, to Kanye’s TLOP follow-up, to Charli XCX’s self-titled record of bangers, there is a lot to be excited about in 2019. And you know what new albums mean: Your favorite artists, on tour.
Now, because you deserve the best new music, first: The Most Anticipated Albums of 2019-2020.
On December 21st, Rihanna slyly responded to a fan on Fenty’s Instagram, who asked outright when the new album was coming. Her response? “2019.” Rihanna’s vocal producer Kuk Harrell also teased the album earlier this week. “R9 is great. R9 is amazing. It’s incredible, And that’s all I’m going to say,”
Earlier this year, RiRi was said to have embarked on a dancehall album, taking in over 500 tracks from Jamaican writers and producers to sample from. Though Rihanna’s album creation process is one full of near-constant change and revision, we are hopeful that some of the dancehall elements snuck through the final cuts of what will—undoubtedly—be a huge pop album this year. Fans can expect the highly anticipated R9 in November.
Angel Olsen, All Mirrors
The fourth studio album from folk singer/songwriter Angel Olsen arrives this year. All Mirrors, due out October 4th via Jagjaguwar, marks the artist’s return since 2016’s MY WOMAN. The LP was recorded with producer John Congeleton, arranger Jherek Bischoff, multi-instrumentalist/arranger/pre-producer Ben Babbitt, and a 14-piece orchestra.
Olsen said in a statement, “In every way—from the making of it, to the words, to how I feel moving forward, this record is about owning up to your darkest side, finding the capacity for new love, and trusting change even when you feel like a stranger.”
All Mirrors will be supported by a Fall tour with Vagabon.
Since the release of her sophomore album hopeless fountain kingdom, Halsey has been working with the biggest names in pop music. Her distinguished vocals can be heard on Benny Blanco’s “Eastside” with Khalid. Or, more recently, on YUNGBLUD’s “11 Minutes” with Travis Barker. She concluded 2018 with dropping her best, most personal song to date “Without Me“. Now, Halsey is preparing her third LP, which she has confirmed will arrive sometime in 2019. In response to a fan’s inquiry, Halsey wrote: “I know you guys are anxious for new music and new memories. for touring and traveling with your friends. for events and pop ups and meeting new people. for music video screenshots. for group chats and late night. thank you for being patient with me. I want it to be perfect.”
Charli XCX, Charli
Not only will Charli XCX release a self-titled album this year. She will also embark on an expansive world tour, bringing Charli to cities all over the world. Star-studded, teeming with guests, Charli’s third studio LP brings together Lizzo, Troye Sivan, HAIM, Big Freedia, Christine and the Queens, and Sky Ferreira, in addition to the rapper CupcaKke and a number of other rising producers and singers. Being at the forefront of pop music, Charli XCX will certainly exert dominance in her genre this year with some of 2019’s most relevant musicians. Charli will be out September 13, and include the already released singles “Blame It On Your Love” and “Gone.”
FKA TWIgs, Magdalene
This past April, FKA Twigs returned with a stunning new single, “Cellophane”. Shortly after came the “Cellophane” music video which featured a darker rendition of FKA Twigs signature aesthetic, some impressive acrobatics, and an overall gorgeous affect on the viewer. Needless to say, “Cellophane” was all we needed to be pining after a new FKA Twigs album. And thank goodness, one is on the way. Little is known about FKA Twigs’ forthcoming record Magdalene, besides major contributions from Chilean composer Nicolas Jaar and guest spots from Future, Skrillex, Cashmere Cat, and Jack Antonoff.
On her first album in five years, FKA Twigs opened up to Pitchfork about the making. “But the process of making this album has allowed me for the first time, and in the most real way, to find compassion when I have been at my most ungraceful, confused and fractured. I stopped judging myself and at that moment found hope in ‘Magdalene.’ To her I am forever grateful.”

Weezer, Van Weezer
This past March, Weezer dropped “The Black Album”. But Rivers Cuomo and co. are already geared up for a 2020 release. The new album, titled Van Weezer, has been preceded by the recently released single “The End of The Game“. The single features a more guitar-heavy sound, which supports what Rivers Cuomo said of the album to Entertainment Weekly earlier this year.
Cuomo said the album goes “back to big guitars” and is “Blue Album-ish, but a little more riffy.” He continued, “The inspiration came from our live shows, where, in the middle of ‘Beverly Hills,’ unlike on the album, everything stops and I just break out with this crazy guitar solo. We noticed that, recently, the crowd just goes crazy when I do that. So it feels like maybe the audience is ready for some shredding again.”
Summer 2020, the band heads out on the “Hella Mega Tour” with Green Day and Fall Out Boy, where they will debut Van Weezer to live audiences everywhere.
Green Day, Father of All…
It’s been three years since Green Day released their last record, Revolution Radio. On the heels of a massive tour announcement with Weezer and Fall Out Boy, Green Day has shared a new single which shares a name with their forthcoming album, due out February 7th. Father of All… is preceded by a bright, upbeat single. Though, we think the rest of the album will contain some darker matter.
“Rock and roll sometimes has become so tame because people are, a lot of rock acts are always trying to look for the feel-good song of the year or something, everything gets really watered down and wimpy, and I think rock music should make you feel bad,” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 show. “We live in just the time of complete and total chaos- or else we’ve always been, but now it’s turned up to Trump. So [the new album] is just trying to reflect what’s going on.”
Green Day’s massive 2020 tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer kicks off in Summer 2020.
Though Grimes has been teasing the release of her Art Angels follow-up for a couple of years now, due to her increasing social media presence, we have reason to believe it’s finally coming. Back in March, Claire Boucher—who’s been diversifying the EDM-pop space with her mammoth tracks and DIY effortlessness—announced that the title of her forthcoming LP would be Miss_Anthropocene. She also announced the inspiration behind the album.
“It’s called Miss_Anthropocene. It’s a concept album about the anthropomorphic Goddess of climate Change: A psychedelic, space-dwelling demon/ beauty-Queen who relishes the end of the world. She’s composed of Ivory and Oil,” wrote Boucher. Completely nice and normal, then…” You can read the full disclosure, here.
Though Grimes has yet to reveal an official release date, she has shared a projected tracklist, making this the closest we’ve come since 2015’s Art Angels to an actual Grimes release.

Kanye West, Jesus Is King
Okay, so maybe it won’t be ‘Yandhi’, or ‘So Help Me God’. But according to an instagram post from Kanye West’s partner Kim Kardashian, an album is coming. The LP, titled (supposedly) Jesus Is King, features a track list of mostly Christian-themed titles. This isn’t so surprising, considering Kanye West has been minimally touring a “Sunday Service” concert for most of 2019, beginning around the time of this year’s Coachella festival. From the leaked videos, it appears that Kanye is still Kanye. He’s remixing his own catalog, in addition to gospel standards, with a precise ear. People in the crowds are jamming. So, even if it’s not the album we expected, we are near certain that Kanye is about to drop something that grooves on September 27th.
Check out the (potential) Jesus Is King tracklist, below.
- “God Is”
- “Sierra Canyon”
- “Hands On”
- “Wake the Dead”
- “Through the Valley”
- “Sweet Jesus”
In the same announcement where new Kanye West, Rihanna, Migos, and The Weeknd albums were promised came word on Drake’s upcoming venture—reportedly due out in 2019. No matter that Drake recently dropped his The Best In The World Pack EP back in June. The artist, around that time, revealed via Instagram that he’s in full “album mode”. So fans, you may want to prepare for another massive Spotify campaign this year, as Drake continues to be one of the most successful and prolific rappers in the game.
Tame Impala, TBD
Fans and critics alike have been waiting patiently for Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker to affirm his plans for a new record. We finally have what could be the first single from the new Tame Impala album, the hypnotic, disco-flecked “Patience“. And not only will Tame Impala be performing this Summer, they are officially on the circuit, scheduled to deliver headlining sets to four music festivals, including the premier, Indio Cali fest Coachella. Now that “Patience” has arrived, we are looking forward to its live debut, not to mention any other new music Kevin Parker decides to drop before Coachella’s Weekend One. Though an official title and release date have yet to be announced, we are finally getting closer to the return of Tame Impala.
Childish Gambino, TBD
We know it’s happening. Some people, the ones who attended Gambino’s final “This Is America” Tour, even heard it: The final Gambino LP. Though we don’t want the end to be so near, we’re excited for what Gambino has in store for his final say. Will it include his internet-breaking single “This Is America”? Or the love-joyous Summer Pack? Though he’s committed to retiring the Childish Gambino moniker, we are holding out for another Donald Glover rap ego to emerge once this era has come to an end.
