Last month, alt-rockstar Courtney Barnett dropped the first single from her second, forthcoming album Tell Me How You Really Feel. Now, just two months away from the album’s release date, Barnett has blessed us with yet another single and music video.
“Need a Little Time” finds Barnett in a weary place, her mind and body desirous of taking some space—quite a lot of space, actually—from herself and the people around her. As Barnett wades through the cosmos, “Need a Little Time” alternates between tranquil, strummed verses and more chaotic hooks. You can check out the “Need a Little Time” music video below.
“Need a Little Time” is a natural addition to Barnett’s discography. While feeling listless, fed-up, and plaintively bored with herself, Barnett manages a beautiful ode to existence and the need to get away. In the clip, Barnett eventually recovers her guitar from space and retires it on a tiny planet, leading us to believe that despite her inner demons, she can handle—and may even prefer—being alone.
The clip was directed by Danny Cohen. “‘Need A Little Time’ has this soaring, floating feeling to it,” he said in a statement. “I decided to play on the meaning of the song: Courtney needs some time away from herself (and you)”. But not forever, as Barnett will be on tour in promotion of Tell Me How You Really Feel, beginning this May through the end of the Summer.
