New Single: “Thought Contagion” by Muse

It’s been awhile since Muse dropped their last LP Drones, which spurred one of the most talked about tours of that year (2015). There hasn’t been any word on the completion of Muse’s upcoming LP, but last year, the English prog-rock band dropped “Dig Down”, a track which can most adequately be described as a rock gospel. Muse dropped visuals for the inspiring and expertly produced “Dig Down“, featuring model/activist Lauren Wasser, who lost a leg to toxic shock syndrome in real life.

Bellamy discussed the inspiration behind the “Dig Down” visuals in an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio. “We wanted this sort of story of catching a person going through some kind of real major struggle on screen but also like finding a person who’s actually been through a real struggle in real life to play that part,” he explained. “And so somehow we’ve got all these parts to come together and we found this amazing, amazing lady.”

Now, Muse is back again with “Thought Contagion“, their second single since Drones. The politically charged rock anthem will appear on their currently untitled/unfinished LP along with “Dig Down”. It’s unlike Muse to drop singles piecemeal this way, as they typically conceptualize albums before perfecting their individual tracks. But according to lead singer Matt Bellamy, the journey to their upcoming LP–which should be completed and arrive either this Fall or next year–has been a rewarding one. Bellamy details his take on Muse’s current process to Rolling Stone below.

“I think for the last two or three albums, we’ve always been thinking about the whole. “What’s the concept? What are the themes? What’s the sound? What are the textures we’re going to focus on for this album?” It was nice to remind ourselves to just think about a song. What makes a song great? Every song you’re going to hear over the next year will be totally unique with their sound, approach, textures and so on.”

The writing of “Thought Contagion” was a way for Muse to streamline their depressions and anxieties about how information, fake news, and radical belief systems are being perpetuated and consumed by the masses. According to Bellamy, the key line to the song is: “You’ve been bitten by a true believer/ You’re been bitten by someone who is hungrier than you/ You’ve been bitten by someone’s false beliefs”.

“Sometimes in life you will come across situations where someone who is a bit idealogical or believes things that are not true in any way will sometimes have more power than you, over you or get more airtime. I think that’s really what the song is about. It’s about how other people’s false belief systems can infect your own and sometimes even affect your feelings.”

The latest offerings from Muse point to a bombastic, arena sound with a slowed, trap-influenced method of lyric delivery. But since Bellamy and Co. are aiming for a “mixed bag” in their upcoming LP, we think the next two singles to come from Muse could range from any point in their discography and beyond.
