NY Giants Season Ticket Prices vs Individual Game Prices

July 1, 2014 by

Despite sharing a city and a stadium with the Jets, the Giants are clearly New York’s football team. Just take a quick look at prices for Giants games vs Jets for all the proof you need of this. Giants fans find themselves in a predicament when it comes to purchasing tickets; do I spend my hard-earned cash on NY Giants Season Tickets, or do I purchase tickets game by game?

The answer is a complex one, and deals with questions like, “What are PSL seats?” and what do Giants PSL cost? Did you know that season tickets can be purchased on the secondary market? Or that lower level corner tickets are the best value when purchasing season tickets? This post will go into great detail covering the ins and outs of the 2014 New York Giants Season Ticket Prices, NY Giants Individual Game Tickets, and New York Giants PSL’s, giving you all the information that you need so that you could get the best Giants tickets.

What are PSL Seats?

Personal Seat License (PSL) is the cost of ‘owning’ a seat or seats at certain stadiums (MetLife Stadium is one of them). PSL’s are a great way for organizations to raise money for a new stadium, as PSL’s can be incredibly expensive. For certain venues PSL sales account for nearly half a billion dollars towards the funding the build of a given stadium. Most recently, Levi’s Stadium (the San Francisco 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara)  employed this strategy.

If you are going to purchase season tickets through the New York Giants, you will need to also purchase PSL’s, and that will leave your wallet feeling lite. Below is a snapshot of some of the PSL listings on the Giants PSL Marketplace to give you an idea of the high costs. (click to enlarge)

This is without a doubt a serious investment, and one that’s not currently paying off. If at any point you want to sell your season tickets and PSL’s, you’re going to take a hit. Resale of PSL’s on the Giants marketplace costs seller’s a 10% commission, but additional fees may apply if the total sale is below $7,500. Now if you are interested in going the route of season tickets through the Giants, the lower level corners and end-zone seats are the best bang for your buck (and yield the greatest return on the secondary market). When comparing the PSL market prices to the original costs from the Giants, you can see that many of the PSL’s are listed for only slightly above their original cost (and in some cases below). With low PSL market prices and meaningful commissions, PSL owners are not able to recoup their original investment. So maybe it’s a good time to buy a PSL: but the bottom line is that this is the most expensive route you can go when purchasing Giants tickets and it comes with risk.

New York Giants Season Ticket Prices VS Individual | Secondary Market Sales

Believe it or not, NY Giants Season Tickets can be purchased on secondary marketplaces. Now the options are much more limited (but with no strings attached), and in certain cases it is actually cheaper to go this route than if you were to purchase tickets to each game individually. Take these 3 listings below for example (prices as of July 1st):

NY Giants Ticket Prices

The total cost to purchase these tickets for the season is $4,490, for an average of $449 per game including preseason. If you were to purchase these tickets for all home games except the preseason, the total cost would be $4,391. At the end of the day, your better off buying individual games for this specific listing.

NY Giants Season Tickets vs Individual

The total cost to purchase these tickets for the season is $4,657, for an average of $466 per game including preseason. If you were to purchase these tickets for all home games individually except for the preseason, the total cost would be $5,022. In this case, the season ticket package is more attractive, despite needing to pay for the preseason games.

The total cost to purchase these tickets for the season is $2,350, for an average of $235 per game including preseason. If you were to purchase these tickets for all home games individually except for the preseason, the total cost would be $2,668. Again in this case, the season ticket package is more attractive, despite needing to pay for the preseason games.

Now these findings aren’t exactly ground-breaking, but some interesting (albeit obvious) patterns can be found. Of course, preseason game prices are absurd, and all NFC East opponents see a big spike in price. More notable though, is that seller’s on the secondary market in general will raise individual game prices for games later in the season, with the assumption that teams will be competitive and fighting for playoff positions.

If you are only planning on attending a game or two a season, you can save more money going early in the season rather than later, or seeing a less attractive opponent. Again, this may seem obvious, but plenty of fans ignore these simple trends, and pay more because of it. On the other hand if you plan on going to most home games, purchasing the full season may make sense for you. For example, using the last ticket example, if you are willing to sell your tickets for the Cowboys game, let’s assume you can recoup $375, that would help lower your average ticket price from $235 to $220. If you sell one other game, let’s assume you can recoup $300, that would lower your average ticket price to $210. If you are going to go to 4 games it’s a toss-up, but if you are going to 5 games (and you can sell some of the more expensive games) then it still makes sense to investigate the full season ticket packages without buying a PSL.
