Last season: 4-12 (3rd in AFC West)

Key Losses: QB Carson Palmer, DT Richard Seymour, OLB Philip Wheeler

Strength of Schedule: 29

The Oakland Raiders haven’t posted a winning season since they lost in the Super Bowl to Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. It would be considered a small miracle if that were to change this season. Former Green Bay Packers director of player personnel Reggie McKenzie was brought in 2012 to fix the mess that was left by the previous GM. It is not something that can change over night, especially when Oakland traded multiple top picks for Carson Palmer and another 3rd rounder for Terrell Pryor. Palmer isn’t even on the roster anymore and Pryor doesn’t figure to compete for the starting spot this season. The dysfunction the organization has shown the past decade is pretty baffling, but there is hope for the future.

The likely starter at quarterback this season will be former Packers and Seahawks back up Matt Flynn. He is by no means a long-term solution, but will be serviceable in a season that lacks any real expectations. Rookie Tyler Wilson will have a chance to develop and learn the offense, and potentially start a few games down the stretch as well. The weapons at these quarterbacks disposal are seriously lacking though, as Darrius Heyward-Bey and tight end Brandon Myers are both gone. The top two receivers will be Denarius Moore and Rod Streater. The Raiders do still have one of the most talented backs in the NFL in Darren McFadden. The only problem is McFadden is constantly injured, and it is starting to take a toll on his explosiveness.

Defensively the Raiders are returning only two starters from last year, defensive end Lamarr Houston and safety Tyvon Branch. Branch will be joined in the secondary by former Raider great Charles Woodson who is coming back after seven seasons in Green Bay. This will likely be Woodson’s last season as he will be 37 in October, but he will be great to have in an otherwise inexperienced secondary. Heading that group is first round pick D.J. Hayden, who has all the skills to be a great corner some day, but also suffered a serious heart injury in college that nearly cost him his life. It was a risky pick you’d expect the old regime to take, but not the new one. Mike Jenkins and Tracy Porter were also brought in as free agents to man the corners. The linebacking corps are going to seriously suffer with the loss of Philip Wheeler, but Oakland hopes they found a gem in third round pick Sio Moore.

The Oakland Raiders open the season on the road against the Indianapolis Colts, but return home to the Colosseum the following week to host the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bottom Line

The Oakland Raiders are going to have a top three pick in the 2014 draft, and Jadeveon Clowney would look great in a Raider uniform. Reggie McKenzie had to set fire to this roster before letting it grow from the ashes, and that’s exactly what he did. The under is lock if I’ve ever seen one.

The Raiders Suck
