Our Top 5 Picks for the 2017 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Even though the 2017 Superbowl is more than a few months away, it’s right around the time the event organizers make their bids for the halftime show performer, perhaps the biggest annual gig an artist can land. And the show it gets better and better each time. Last year, Beyonce, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars put on an incredible show. With Coldplay’s colorful opening, Queen Bey’s commanding entrance, and the epic battle between the Formation dancers (led by Beyonce) and Bruno Mars, 2016 was one for the books. Who do you think will headline the performance of the year? Here are Our Top 5 Picks for the 2017 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick LamarIf this bid happens, it would be a risky move for the NFL. Since Kendrick Lamar’s latest album To Pimp a Butterflyhe’s taken a strong political stance, and the NFL may not want any politics to be a part of the halftime show after the consequential controversy that followed Beyonce’s 2016 performance. But even with the risk, we would love to see what Kendrick Lamar does on a stage of that enormity. He is one of the industry’s most prominent rappers, after all. After being nominated a Grammy for Album of the Year, Kendrick Lamar has taken to headlining several music festivals, including the inaugural Panorama festival in NYC. Though we haven’t seen Kendrick Lamar embark on a full-length tour since the peak of his career, we’re hopeful that if he gets the bid for this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, there will be some big news to follow.

AdeleYesterday, a rumor surfaced that the NFL is currently trying to lock down Adele for the halftime show. And we couldn’t be more excited about the prospect. The British pop star, in our opinion, makes the most sense to draw viewers domestic and worldwide. When Adele announced her tour in support of 25she sold-out every single date. The record itself spent 10 consecutive weeks on Billboard’s No. 1 spot. According to the rumor, the NFL is doing everything they can to sell it to Adele, but “her nerves are the issue”. Adele has spoken about her stage fright in the past, and considering the size of the Super Bowl audience—not including its viewership—her fears are justifiable. But we have no doubt that if Adele is in fact this year’s halftime performer, she’ll blow us away like she endlessly does.

Kanye West

Kanye WestOkay, we can’t help but wonder what Kanye West could possibly pull out for a Super Bowl halftime show, considering his antics in the past. We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Life of Pablo Tour beginning in Indianapolis, so we’re not sure what memorable aspect will come out of this year’s set design, but after the creepy resurrection imagery and fake mountain of the Yeezus tour, we think Kanye West is capable of anything. The Life of Pablo was met with critical acclaim and solidified Kanye as one of the most important and innovative rappers to date. It’s a mystery why he hasn’t made it to the Super Bowl halftime stage yet, but after the year he’s had, 2017 may finally be his shot.

SiaThough mildly socially phobic, Sia has gotten through large scale performances with her trademark wig, shielding her face from the public. This year, the Australian pop star saw her song “Cheap Thrills” land on Billboard’s No. 1 spot, her first single to reach those heights. Her latest record, This Is Acting, also includes successful collaborations “Titanium” w/ David Guetta and “Wild Ones” w/ Flo Rida. If Sia were to land the bid for this year’s halftime show, we think several guests would be involved. Sia has collaborated with many iconic musicians and written chart-topping songs for other industry superstars from Rihanna, to Celine Dion, to Beyonce. If Sia were to headline the 2017 Super Bowl halftime show, we think several guests and stunts would be pulled to make for a wonderful night.

Major Lazer

DiploSure, there hasn’t ever been a performer out of the EDM genre to headline the Super Bowl before, but if there was, we’d be in no better hands than Major Lazer, otherwise known as Diplo. Major Lazer has been increasingly successful at bridging the gap between EDM and pop music, especially this past year with his high ranking collaborations with Justin Bieber. Major Lazer would likely bring Skrillex, his Jack U partner, to share the stage since they’ve proven to be quite the tour de force when performing together. After rocking the Garden last New Year’s Eve, Diplo has shown he can throw a truly epic party. If he’s given the bid for this year’s bid, there will definitely be an unforgettable night taking place in Houston.
