For those of you with fine-tuned hip-hop sensibilities and a pulse, maybe you have heard of Outkast. As a completely unbiased music aficionado, I remember them fondly. The best-selling hip-hop duo of all time went on indefinite hiatus less than three years after scoring the biggest hits of their career with the history-making double solo album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. In case you live under a rock, let me tell you why they are relevant now.
Rumors started swirling in late 2013 that Big Boi and Andre 3000 might be considering a reunion after nearly seven years off the grid. A few weeks ago, it was confirmed that frontmen Big Boi and Andre 3000 would be joining forces to headline the Coachella Music Festival in April. A week later, they confirmed yet another music festival, New York’s Governor’s Ball in June. There’s a reason reunions always make the headlines: everyone loves a comeback. That’s probably why it’s now been announced that Outkast will spend the spring and summer as the marquee act at over 40 festivals around the world. Here are a few reasons why you should snag yourself a ticket to one.
1. Big Boi and André 3000 are hanging out in Atlanta and having a ball.
The duo are back and rowdier than ever. Something tells us the vibe of their performances will be more than enjoyable.
2. April 26th will be the 20th anniversary of their debut album: Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.
Some other albums have turned 20 this year and resulted in legendary performances (such as Nas and Illmatic at the Kennedy Center). Is this perhaps in the cards for Outkast as well? Or could they make one of the festival performances the site of epic anniversary celebration?
3. The outfits will probably be something like this.
André 3000 has been spotted in ridiculous garb around the ATL lately, and the duo is notorious for their outlandish performance wear. Only time will tell what wonders we’ll see next.
4. André 3000 plays Jimi Hendrix.
The film All Is By My Side, about the year Hendrix spent in London, is rumored to be releasing this year. With Dre as Hendrix, this role could change the game and turn him into a next-level icon. Wouldn’t you love to see an icon perform before they start strapping a couple zeros onto the price of that ticket?
And most importantly…
5. This could be you.
André 3000 has been sighted out and about taking goofy pics with fans quite a bit lately. Could you be the next guy with vague hand gestures next to Andre? Just look at this guy.
I rest my case.
