Destined to be in New York City, but still without New Year’s Eve plans? Instead of battling cab traffic, sobering up in the cold weather en route to the next bar, or losing your significant other at a warehouse party, we think attending a concert or comedy show are great sources of entertainment for the holiday.
This year, New York City is hosting a wide variety of live events to signal the end of an era and beginning of 2020. Limited to comedy and concerts, here are the Best New Year’s Eve Shows in NYC.
The Strokes and Mac Demarco
To continue the recent trend of band reunions, all-time rock group The Strokes have reconvened for a select number of concerts and festival sets for 2019-20. Though lead singer Albert Hammond Jr. is now four solo albums deep, The Strokes are back
—and performing from their repertoire dating back to 2001’s Is This It. For this special New Year’s Eve concert at Barclays, The Strokes will be supported by alt-indie musician Mac Demarco.
Where: Beacon Theatre
The southern rock band Gov’t Mule, first created as an Allman Brothers side project by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody, will be hosting an incredible night of jams at the Beacon Theatre this upcoming New Year’s Eve. Fresh off celebrating their 25th anniversary with an extensive run of shows, Gov’t Mule are slated to round out the year with a stellar set list of band and Allman Brothers classics.
Sleigh Bells (DJ Set)
Where: Brooklyn Bowl
It’s been a couple of years since the last Sleigh Bells album, Kid Krushev, but this past October fans were given a glimpse of potential for a new release. The recent single “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” has not since been followed up with a tour or album announcement, but seeing that the electronic band is set to perform a DJ set at the famed Brooklyn Bowl for New Year’s Eve is promising. At the very least, Sleigh Bells are bound to host an unforgettable, groovy, electric night in Williamsburg this NYE.
Once again, America’s beloved, cult-classic jam band are set to end the year in New York City at none other than the famed Madison Square Garden. This year, for four nights, Phish will throw an unforgettable round of concerts to wrap up what has been a lavish year of live music. If seeing Phish remains unchecked on your bucket list, we suggest making 2019 the year of reckoning.
The Disco Biscuits
Where: Playstation Theater
Much like their jam band compatriots Phish, The Disco Biscuits aren’t performing one night, but four to wrap up the year. Not only will they be celebrating the end of 2019 along with everyone else, but the electronica jam band is also commemorating what has been an incredibly successful Winter Tour. The Disco Biscuits have brought new material to just about every stage, delighting fans on what has been their first full tour in years. Get ready for some fresh biscuits, served up through the arrival of 2020.
Where: Terminal 5
Looking for some high-energy festivities on NYE? We can’t think of a more outrageous, rare, and outright cool event than heading to Terminal 5 for Kaskade’s New Year’s Eve Party. Besides a concert from one of EDM’s beloved pioneers, fans are also treated to an open bar from 10PM-1AM
—available to each and every 21+ ticket holder. If a raging crowd is what you want for this holiday, this concert makes it easy.
Looking for some laughs, while spending New Year’s Eve with class? We can’t think of a more uniquely fun, New York City vibe than attending a comedy show for New Year’s Eve. Because most of these shows will have surprise guests, the final lineups are subject to change up through the last wee hours of 2019.
We suggest checking out these annually popular, bonafide comedy venues. And if you can, purchase tickets early
—we aren’t the only New Yorkers who find NYE comedy shows to be a great way to spend the holiday.
