The Most Anticipated Rock Albums of 2022

From Elvis to Coldplay, Little Richard to Radiohead, rock music has evolved at a lightening pace since the genre “arrived” in the 50’s. When it comes to rock and roll, artists are never done pushing boundaries, exploring fresh sounds, experimenting, making themselves new.

Indie rock, folk, heavy metal, and pop rock. This is one of the most diverse genres in the music industry, with new artists emerging each year. The rockers making music today are worth listening to, as they continue to write and play for this radical musical tradition.

Here they are. The Most Anticipated Rock Albums of 2022, the records we are most looking forward to hearing this year.

Jack White: Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive

Album Release Date: April 8, 2022 (Fear of the Dawn) and July 22, 2022 (Entering Heaven Alive)

It’s been four years since Jack White released 2018’s Boarding House Reach. For those of you who thought you heard Jack White on the new Call of Duty, you were correct. On “Taking Me Back,” specially released for the video game, Jack White sports his fuzzy, vintage rock sound. Though we can’t be certain, we anticipate “Taking Me Back” is representative of at least one of White’s new albums.

According to the artist, his upcoming albums, Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive, are “two entirely distinctive albums … each defined by different inspirations, different themes, different moods.” The records were both written over the course of the past several years and now, finally, White is ready to release them via his label Third Man Records. Fear of the Dawn is out April 8th, while Entering Heaven Alive will roll out next summer, July 22nd.

Eddie Vedder: Earthling

Album Release Date: February 11, 2022

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will release his solo album Earthling at the beginning of next year. Back in September, the artist revealed the lead single “Long Way, ” a Tom Petty-era track that finds help from several of Vedder’s contemporaries including former Heartbreakers band member Benmont Tench on the organ.

Earthling will be Eddie Vedder’s first solo album in album over a decade—but “solo” is a bit of a misnomer. Along with production by reigning Grammy producer of the year Andrew Watts, the group behind Earthling includes Pearl Jam touring member Josh Klinghoffer, multi-instrumentalist Glen Hansard, bassist Pino Palladino and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. We strongly hope Eddie Vedder takes this super group on tour in 2022 in support of Earthling.

Spoon: Lucifer on the Sofa

Album Release Date: February 11, 2022

The indie rock outfit Spoon will be releasing their tenth studio album, Lucifer on the Sofa, next year. According to the band, Lucifer on the Sofa will be a return to rock form since their diversion into electronic dance music for 2017’s Hot Thoughts.

The new record, inspired by a vision of the devil on lead singer Britt Daniel’s couch, was written and recorded before and amid the pandemic. In 2019, Daniel moved back to his native Texas to write a more straight-up-and-down record with a full rock sound. Lucifer on the Sofa is the concentrated, and highly successful, effort of those dark and twisty years.

Korn: Requiem

Album Release Date: February 4, 2022

Legendary nu-metal band Korn have announced their 14th studio album, Requiem, to be due out next year. Requiem was led by the single “Start the Healing,” a raw, powerful track from Korn that arrived with its own cathartic narrative music video.

The nine-track Requiem will be the band’s follow-up to 2019’s The Nothing. We think it’s very likely that Korn will tour in support of their new record.

Elvis Costello and The Imposters: The Boy Named If

Album Release Date: January 14, 2022

The famed, Grammy award-winning artists Elvis Costello will be releasing another album with his band, The Imposters, next year. The Boy Named If, which Costello says began its conception with “just an electric guitar, some sharps and flats, high heels and lowdowns,” will be out early 2022, in mid-January.

Whatever you take out of these tales, I wrote them for you and to make the life of these songs a little less lonely, if you should care to dive in a little deeper,” says Costello. Longtime fans of the artist, you don’t want to miss his upcoming album The Boy Named If. Hopefully, since his last stint was cut short, Elvis Costello will tour in the same year.

For their upcoming album, Heavy Steps, Comeback Kid enlisted GOJIRA’s Joe Duplantier for a guest appearance and producer John Paul Peters, who recorded Comeback Kid’s first album Turn It Around.

Underoath: Voyeurist

Album Release Date: January 14, 2022

Metalcore band Underoath will be hitting the road early next year in support of their new album, Voyeurist. The new Underoath album will arrive mid-January, with the band heading out on tour just a month later with a kick-off show in Dallas.

Underoath will be touring with support from metal rock bands Every Time I Die and Spiritbox. “There was a time during the pandemic where I didn’t know if we’d ever get to tour again,” Underoath vocalist Spencer Chamberlain said to Alt Press. “I would sit up at night and try to wrap my brain around a world without live music, and I just couldn’t ever digest that thought. That being said, we couldn’t think of a better way to come back on the tour than with our friends Every Time I Die and Spiritbox. Our thought is if we are gonna do this, let’s do it!

Band of Horses: Things Are Great

Album Release Date: January 21, 2022

The indie rock outfit Band of Horses are returning next year with their first full-length album since 2016’s Why Are You OK. Back in October, the band shared the album’s first single “Crutch.”

According to Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, the song, like many of their tracks, is derivative of his own life experience. “I think I wanted to say, ‘I’ve got a crush on you,’ and I thought it was funny how relationships also feel like crutches. I feel like everybody has had a time when nothing goes right and you still have to carry on. I think that feeling hits you in this song even if you don’t know what the specifics are.”

Band of Horses, in addition to dropping Things Are Great next year, will also be touring in support of the new album. You can view Band of Horses tour dates, and purchase tickets, with the link below.

Album Release Date: Fall 2022

David Draiman, frontman of Disturbed, has come out with some good news heading into the new year. Disturbed is hard at work on their 8th studio album, and according to Draiman, it won’t be long before fans will get to hear it. “We’re gonna hopefully start tracking right after the New Year, and feeling the way that it’s feeling, it’s not gonna take long,” he hyped to Loudwire.

What will fans hear on the new Disturbed album? Draiman told Loudwire Nights host Toni Gonzalez that fans can expect “old school Disturbed.” Raucous, rhythmic, with anthems throughout, Disturbed seems to be working right in the middle of their element. Draiman said to Loudwire, “If I had to target it, it’s somewhere between The Sickness and Ten Thousand Fists. It’s in that realm, and it was really, really nice going back there. We’re just digging the sh*t out of it right now.”

Album Release Date: TBA

According to famed guitarist of U2, The Edge, the group is working on the follow-up to 2017’s Songs of Experience. The new U2 album is far from finished, with producers and collaborators very much up in the air, but The Edge has spoken out on the band’s progress so far.

“We are firmly locked in the tower of song and working away on a bunch of new things,” he said to Rolling Stone journalist Adam Clayton. “I’m just having so much fun writing and not necessarily having to think about where it’s going to go. It’s more more about enjoying the experience of writing and having no expectations or limitations on the process.”

In addition to a new album, U2 is also contemplating a commemorative Zoo TV tour. It’s been 30 years since U2 went on the Zoo TV Tour in support of Achtung Baby, a tour and album central to the band’s rejuvenation in the 90’s.

Through sensory overload, media programming, and jarring cuts of news, the Zoo TV tour aimed straight at the band’s self-seriousness. Now, The Edge thinks the Zoo TV concept would fit perfectly within today’s live entertainment, making it an attractive option for their next tour—hopefully, in 2022.
