The Yeezus Movie: Watch The Trailer, Read The Crazy

After performing the North American leg of the infamous Yeezus tour last week, Kanye West went on to discreetly debut a trailer for a new – wait for it –  Yeezus FILM. That’s right, we will now have the pleasure of feeling confused and slightly disturbed by Kanye in a theater! But hey, as Yeezus himself proclaimed at a Baltimore stop on the tour recently,

“This is the Yeezus tour; this ain’t the ‘Whoever- The – Fuck – You – Are’ tour.”

Then He said “Let there be movie.”
And then there was movie.
And it was (hopefully) good.

The mysterious film was directed by Hype Williams, who you may remember as the music video director who worked with West on several of his music videos such as “Gold Digger,” “Stronger,” “Heartless,” “Amazing” and “All of the Lights” (as well as the videos of countless other artists like Robin Thicke, Rick Ross, and Outkast).  According to unnamed sources, the film is supposedly a narrative of Kanye’s crazy life, and while West will not himself appear on screen, his fiancée, Kim Kardashian, will have a pivotal role.

Given West’s affinity for drama, it’s unsurprising that the production itself came with its share of hubbub. A recent interview with Vice author Bret Easton Ellis (“Less Than Zero,” “American Psycho”) divulged word that he was collaborating with West on a film project following the rapper’s appointment of him in recreating a scene from “American Psycho” for a promo for “Yeezus,” West has yet to respond to Ellis’ comments, or really acknowledge them at all (guess he’s busy or something).  Considering the trailer seems to feature scenes that fit his description, it’s uncertain whether or not the film is the same project that Ellis discussed.  The proposed film is now apparently stuck “in Kanye land”, with its “whole other time-frame.”

Kanye Shrug Crazy

Despite all the performative melodrama at play, in the end it all comes down to this statement from Ellis, in summary of his collaborations with Kanye: “I didn’t want to at first. Then I listened to Yeezus … and I thought, regardless of whether I’m right for this project, I want to work with whoever made this.” This, my friends, is why masses of people pay obscene prices for the world’s longest nosebleeds at Madison Square Garden, at Baltimore Arena, and now, thanks to The Yeezus Movie, soon at a movie theater near you.*
*Correction: EVERY movie theater near you (anywhere Kanye finds a screen…or a mirror, or a spoon, or whatever).

The reality is indisputable. Kanye West has received 21 Grammy Awards and 52 nominations. His gold album Yeezus was the most critically acclaimed new album of 2013 and the 6th consecutive #1 album of his storied career.  To date, Kanye West has sold over 30 million albums and over 78 million digital tracks worldwide. Pardon my word choice, but Kanye West is a god.

And that is exactly how he can get away with shows full of lasers, manmade mountains and bejewelled masks without a peep from the press about the utter strangeness of it all. Sorry Miley, maybe some day people will take your crazy for genius, too.
…Maybe. Keep twerking, girl.

Check the new trailer for the Yeezus movie below. Coming soon to a theater near you.
Better start building that ark.
