Up and Coming: Macklemore

[well]UPDATE: Are Macklemore and Ryan Lewis going on tour in 2015? Find out here![/well]

To say Macklemore is an up and coming artist is almost a discredit to his decade long career, and yet, it’s really the best way to describe him. Just a few weeks ago, the names “Macklemore & Ryan Lewis” would have not been recognized by the average person outside of Seattle, WA. But, due to an overwhelming surge of internet support, Macklemore’s first studio-length album The Heist, produced by Ryan Lewis, debuted at #1 two days ago. The music video for Thrift Shop, the first single off the album, currently has over six million views.

The movement began on reddit a month ago when the video for Thrift Shop debuted. The video made it to the front page (which is viewed by tens of thousands of people at any given time), and a revolution was started. People began asking for Macklemore to do an AMA – basically an open thread for reddit users to ask the original poster any question (“ask me anything”). AMA’s have become incredibly popular in the past year (President Obama even participated in one), and so the idea somehow got to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and they participated in an AMA two days ago – coinciding with their album release.

The many users of reddit banded together and got the album to number one, and the phenomenon spread its way to the far reaches of the internet. Demand for tickets to their November tour spiked almost instantly. Nearly all of their upcoming shows are sold out. Their album, independently produced, is currently charting above Jay-Z’s Live in Brooklyn album on iTunes.

If you consider yourself “hip to the music scene,” you will want tickets to this show.  (Conveniently placed right below!)
