December 17, 2013 by

It was announced yesterday on CBS Radio’s all sports station WFAN that the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be headlining WFAN’s “Big Hello To Brooklyn” at Barclays Center on February 1, 2014. The announcement was made by acclaimed drummer of the Chili Peppers, Chad Smith. The show is taking place the night before Super Bowl XVLIII kicks off at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The band isn’t currently touring. Smith told hosts on WFAN, “We’ve taken a little time off, but this is a big event, it’s a very exciting time for New York”. Not only is this the first show the Grammy Award-winning rock band has played in New York City in 10 years, but it is making this the biggest weekend in sports and entertainment. Tickets for the Red Hot Chili Peppers live at Barclays on February 1, 2014 will go on sale Friday, December 20th at 10:00 AM EST (AMEX Cardholders can purchase tickets through Ticket Master now!). Will you be purchasing tickets to best pre-Super Bowl party featuring one of the greatest rock bands of all time?

Let’s just take a second to remember exactly why the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the best rock bands of all time.

5 Reasons Why We Love the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers5. Funky Monks (1991)

Funky Monks is a documentary about the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the making of acclaimed album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The documentary was filmed in “The Mansion”, a supposedly haunted house which was previously inhabited by Jimi Hendrix, Harry Houdini, and The Beatles. The documentary was filmed in black and white and features footage of the band recording tracks off Blood Sugar Sex Magik, in addition to featuring interviews of each band member. Lucky for us, the documentary is streamed fully on YouTube, you can watch it here

4. Flea, the Embodiment of Cool

Flea is the only other original member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, alongside his lifetime friend and fellow band mate, Anthony Kiedis. In addition to being one of the best rock bassists of all time, Flea is an ardent supporter of Music Education and Classical performance—he even founded the Silverlake Music Conservatory in LA, dedicated to serving music education to the youth of LA. And when you think Flea couldn’t be even more of an amazing person and artist, let me remind you that he has been featured in two really cool films, The Big Lebowski and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. But first and foremost, he plays a mean bass.

3. Anthony Kiedis in F.I.S.T

Lead singer Anthony Kiedis has led quite the interesting life. Growing up in Hollywood with his struggling actor father, Kiedis was exposed to a fast paced and crazy lifestyle from an early age. Kiedis worked as a child actor for a little while, his major role being Sylvester Stallone’s son in the movie F.I.S.T. Kiedis has one more acting job in an ABC after school special; it wasn’t long before Kiedis met Flea in high school and began conceiving what would be the early roots of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both performances are pretty priceless.

2. Anthony Kiedis: Rock Star, and Author?

Scar Tissue (2004) is a book written by Anthony Kiedis and Larry Sloman detailing his childhood growing up in LA, life as a rock star, and his ongoing drug addiction with heroine. Having personally read this book, I can say that not only does it give an intimate and compelling portrait of what it’s like to live the fast and wild life of a rock star, but it shows how truly human and these experiences are. This book doesn’t glamorize the lifestyle, but instead shows the man behind the live shows and after parties. If you haven’t already, read Scar Tissue—you’ll definitely grow a deeper fondness for both the band and the man who started it all.
