Well, it’s been a very busy year for Chance the Rapper, even without dropping a new album. From officially becoming engaged to his daughter’s mother and longtime girlfriend Kirsten Corley, to starring in a film, to heavily endorsing a candidate in Chicago’s most recent mayoral race, Chance has managed to be everywhere. But has he been in the studio?

Continuing his 2018 trend of releasing music as he pleases, Chance the Rapper has recently dropped two new singles, the melancholic “The Man Who Has Everything” and the bouncy, piano driven “My Own Thing” feat. Chicago’s own Joey Purp. The latter of the two tracks is vintage Chance, and is much closer to what we heard last from him on Coloring Book, which is now two full years behind him.

Sudden, unexpected, but seemingly related due to the shared cover art designs. “My Own Thing” and “The Man Who Has Everything” joins Chance’s July releases, which contained the premonitory “I Might Need Security“, “Work Out“, “Wala Cam“, and “65th and Ingleside“. Will these singles eventually amount to a full album? If so, why is Chance releasing them in this way, with several months between them, and no hype to keep the masses excited about a full LP?

Considering he has a few other projects in question, and nothing officially announced on the solo rap front, we aren’t hopeful that Chance will drop a new LP in 2019. BUT, we do think its likely that Chance will finally release some projects he’s been talking about for years now, such as the long-rumored Gambino collaboration, not to mention the Ye produced “Good Ass Job”, which we think must be coming since Ye’s very public visit to Chicago last Fall.

What else deters us from believing Chance will drop a new solo album in 2019? He has recently signed onto two high profile, time-demanding projects: producing a musical, and judging a Netflix reality competition. With these announcements, and a new single titled “My Own Thing”, we think Chance is sending a message, loud and clear. We shouldn’t expect him to do anything, because he can, and will, do his own thing.
