The Nets were founded in 1967 as a charter member of the ABA as the New Jersey Americans. The franchise moved to Long Island in 1968 as the New York Nets, winning a pair of ABA championships, led by Julius Erving. After joining the NBA in 1976 following the ABA-NBA merger, the Nets returned to New Jersey in 1977, where they remained until moving to Brooklyn in 2012. The Nets largely struggled during their time in New Jersey, but led by stars such as Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson, Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles, and Keith Van Horn, the Nets appeared in consecutive NBA Finals in 2001-02 and 2002-03. After moving to Brooklyn in 2012, Brooklyn found initial success behind the quartet of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, and Joe Johnson. While the Nets remain in search of their first NBA championship, the former New York Nets won two ABA championships in 1973-74 and 1975-76, led by Hall of Famer Julius Erving. Since joining the NBA after the ABA-NBA merger in 1976, the Nets have advanced to back-to-back Finals in 2001-02 and 2002-03, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, respectively.
Since moving to Brooklyn in 2012, the Nets have battled the New York Knicks for top billing in the Big Apple. The Nets also have rivalries with the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. More recently, the Nets lost a hard-fought playoff series with the Milwaukee Bucks, who would win the NBA championship in 2020-21 after beating Brooklyn in seven games in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Nets enter the season among the title favorites, thanks to their superstar trio of Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving (whose vaccination status has caused uncertainty over his availability this season). Surrounding the star triumvirate is a strong, experienced supporting cast. Former All-Stars Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Paul Millsap join promising big man Nic Claxton and free-agent addition James Johnson in the frontcourt. Another key free agent signing, Patty Mills, along with holdovers Joe Harris, Bruce Brown, and Jevon Carter add support on the perimeter. Rookie guard Cam Thomas looked sharp in Summer League and could factor in the rotation, as well.
Former NBA great Steve Nash enters his second season as coach of the Nets. In his debut season in 2020-21, Nash guided the Nets to within one game of the Eastern Conference finals, losing in seven games to the eventual champions, the Milwaukee Bucks.
