One of the best-selling acts of all time, Australian rock band AC/DC is headlining Coachella this year. Formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, AC/DC underwent plenty of lineup changes in its formative years, the most devastating being the loss of lead singer Bon Scott in 1980. Later that year, the band replaced Scott with Brian Johnson, after which they recorded “Back in Black,” their highest-grossing album and one of the best-selling albums of all time. AC/DC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, and to this day continues making music and touring around the globe. The band released a new album, “Rock or Bust,” in 2014, just after the departure of Malcolm Young. This year AC/DC is embarking on a world tour to promote their new album as well as celebrate the band’s 40th anniversary.

Tiger & Woods is the anonymous disco duo of two musicians who go by the names Larry Tiger and David Woods (hilariously, their monikers combine the names of two very different celebrities: Larry David and Tiger Woods). The Italian duo is shrouded in mystery, as they don’t have a huge online presence – you won’t find out much about them through a regular Google search. Their belief is that their shows should be about the party and the music, not about the guys behind the gear, and they refreshingly focus solely on their music rather than trying to build themselves up as a brand.

Tyler, The Creator

Tyler, The Creator first gained recognition as the leader and co-founder of the alternative hip hop group Odd Future. He has recently branched out to embark on a solo career, and has been met with nothing but success. While he could get by on his music alone, his live shows are really something to see. He’s known for making jokes and bantering with the audience, often saying some pretty controversial things and stirring up the crowd. Nonetheless, his performances are always high-energy and thrilling for anyone in attendance. His latest album, “Wolf,” arrived in 2013 and features the likes of Pharrell Williams and fellow Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt among other collaborators.

Until the Ribbon Breaks

Until the Ribbon Breaks is a British band that blends electronic music with rock, hip hop, and pop. Named for the phenomenon of playing mixtapes over and over again “until the ribbon breaks,” the group began as the solo project of frontman Pete Lawrie Winfield. Winfield released a few tracks as a solo artist before recruiting James Gordon and Elliot Wall to make the band a trio. Early on, their remix work for artists like Sam Smith, The Weeknd, and Lorde earned them some recognition, and Lorde even invited them to tour with her on her North American tour in 2013. Until the Ribbon Breaks released their first full-length album, “A Lesson Unlearnt,” in January.

What So Not

What So Not is the collaboration of Australian DJ/producers Flume and Emoh Instead. The duo garnered plenty of attention when they formed in 2013 since Flume was already popular in the electronic music scene, with their first upload on Soundcloud, “Jaguar,” amassing over 15,000 plays within hours of its release. For those who feel like Flume’s music is a bit too chill for their taste, What So Not has a more upbeat and club-friendly vibe.

2014 Lineup

2013 Coachella Lineup

At first glance, the Coachella 2013 Lineup can seem a little disappointing:

But after researching some of these performers, I’ve found that there are many hidden gems in the lineup that are well worth the investment in the Coachella Music Festival. The headliners, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, The Stone Roses, and Blur, are expected to rock the stage with legendary valor. But in my opinion, the heart of the festival lies with the up and coming artists you may have not heard of. Instead of taking time away from the stage during the smaller acts, give a listen to these skilled musicians whose sounds resonate and are alike to some of the bands we all know and love.

If you like Coachella 2013 sub-headliner Yeah Yeah Yeahs:

Check out the Palma Violets and Japandroids on Friday, April 12th & 19th. The Japandroids are a garage punk duo from Vancouver whose fame is driven by the energetic, empowered vocalist Brian King and drummer David Prowse.

The Palma Violets have a rowdy angst which makes their live performances captivating to audiences. Much like the edgy-art performance of Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O, the Palma Violets deliver with a purpose.

If you like the indie rock/ alternative sound of Coachella 2013 sub-headliner The Lumineers:

Be sure to catch The Airborne Toxic Event and The Gaslight Anthem onSunday, April 14th & 21st.The Airborne Toxic Event is a band just about everyone can enjoy. With stunning harmonic vocals, an enchanting violinist, and spirited percussion, The Airborne Toxic Event has mastered a sound you’ll be sorry to miss.

The Gaslight Anthem has attracted a following due to their soulful punk rock, a sound which not only moves audiences, but moves players Alex Levine, Benny Harowitz, and Alex Rosamilia. Want to see a band raptured by their own sound and lyrics? Don’t miss The Gaslight Anthem at Coachella 2013.

If you like the indie electric sound of Coachella 2013 sub-headliner Passion Pit:

Make a point to see performances by Portugal. The Man., a band which has explored just about every genre of sound while maintaining a fresh and appealing edge to their music. The mixing of rock, electric, and soulful vocals has kept Portugal. The Man on the watch for up and coming artists.

If you like Coachella 2013 sub-headliner Band of Horses:

You will also want to see an awe inspiring performance by fellow sub-headliner (though lesser known), The XX. An indie pop band from across the pond, The XX has paved their way by delivering live shows which have exceeded an audiences expectations by ten-fold. Much like artists Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky, The XX showcases a movement of sound which delivers musical ingenuity at its finest.

The Neighbourhood & The Shouting Matches, Hidden Gems in the Coachella 2013 Lineup

The Neighbourhood is an indie rock/ hip-hop talent, combining characteristics from so many genres that their performances feel like a walk through what we all love about music. Refined and complicated, The Neighbourhood is a band you’ll want to watch for the experience of seeing something you’ve never seen before.

The Shouting Matches is a blues band, comprised of Brian Moen, Phil Cook, and Justin Vernon. If the name Justin Vernon doesn’t ring a bell, does Bon Iver? Justin Vernon, lead vocalist of Bon Iver, formed The Shouting Matches as his blues band project. I don’t know if you’ll ever have a chance to see Justin Vernon in a more intimate frame, so don’t miss your chance to see The Shouting Matches at Coachella 2013!
