Cubs Seeking 2nd World Series Title in as Many Years

August 15, 2017 by

The Chicago Cubs made history in 2016 and erased a 108-year championship deficit with a season for the ages.  They were the odds-on favorite to win the title heading into last season after being swept in the NLCS in 2015, and last year were the best team in baseball from start to finish en route to their first title in multiple generations, erasing the curse and completely resetting expectations for Cubs and baseball fans everywhere.  This has naturally led to tickets for Cubs games being one of the hottest MLB tickets in the sport.

The Cubs came into 2017 once again as the favorite to win the World Series and struggled out of the gate, much to the surprise of baseball fans everywhere.  They now had the winning pedigree and obvious pieces in place to repeat as champs, but the pitching faltered and injuries helped lead to a sub-.500 record of 43-45 at the All-Star break and a 5.5 game deficit of the surprising Brewers team who had exceeded expectations and finished a very strong first half.

Epstein – heralded as one of the top MLB executives in the game and the man who ended championship droughts in both Boston and now Chicago – chose to make a big move by trading top prospect Eloy Jimenez to their crosstown rival White Sox in exchange for a front of the rotation lefty in Jose Quintana, who they hoped would help solidify a pitching staff that had under-performed and needed a boost if they wanted to be considered serious threats to the Dodgers for the NL pennant.

That trade has helped out their rotation and the bats have woken up in the second half, and as of today the Cubs are playing a much-better .655 baseball with a record of 19-10 that is among the best in the sport since the break.  They now lead the NL Central Division and figure not to look back as they build momentum until the playoffs, where any fan would love to see a matchup with the world-beater Dodgers who have looked like the best team in baseball in 2017.

A playoff matchup between these two teams truly would be rematch of last year’s NLCS and a battle of the playoff experience of Chicago versus the outright talent and depth of Los Angeles, who has been disappointing come playoff time for what seems like the better part of a decade now in the Clayton Kershaw era.

With Chicago now playing their best baseball and defending its World Series crown, prices can be high at Wrigley Field and even when they come into an opponent’s ballpark.  They play winning baseball in both Chicago and the road, so you’ll figure to have a great chance to catch a Cubs victory no matter where you see them play.
