Ellie Goulding and Angel Haze Show Their Darker Sides

February 6, 2014 by

People have been doing a lot of covers lately. Not long after Lorde covered James Blake’s “Retrograde” and Ellie Goulding covered Alt-J’s “Tessellate,”  Ellie Goulding came back on the cover game. This time with Angel Haze, she covered another track from James Blake’s Overgrown, “Life Round Here.” This track seems to stand out from the other recent covers, however. Something gritty resides underneath this one. Check out some of the lyrics from Haze’s verse below.

I wonder how you’d feel if you were locked in my mind

See you barely understand my thoughts sometimes

Little bit of depth and a little bit of God

Cause I swear that I be livin’ in the dark sometimes

And it sets in here, nobody gets let in

‘Til I let my emotions out on every single page and instrumental I’m left with

Shit, I wonder, will I ever really feel shit?

And if it all takes time and I ask why, will time eventually reveal this?

Cause… remedy, I’m searchin’ for the remedy

I’m fucked up and my heart’s just another ghost of my memory

Knock real hard on real real wood

Things still feel bad when they’re real real good

When I interviewed Haze for Ladygunn Magazine a while back, she told me a little about this darkness:

“For me, it was really important, especially crossing into the New Year, to realize that I have a lot of darkness and a lot of baggage and a lot of bad things inside of me, that it’s important to let go of things and make efforts to move forward, you know? I feel like you can’t really carry so much negative with you if you’re trying to go into really positive places and become a more positive person and be about the life you claim you are. So for me, letting it go was like taking that step forward.”

Her recent collaboration with Goulding may just be letting in some light.
