Will Phoebe Bridgers Release A New Album in 2023?
It’s been three years since Phoebe Bridgers released her deeply beloved and critically acclaimed sophomore record, Punisher. But Bridgers has been very busy writing, recording, and performing in the time since she last dropped an album.
Phoebe Bridgers has been a featured artist on many records these past few years. The National collaborated with Bridgers on “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend,” which appeared on their latest First Two Pages of Frankenstein. She was also seen on the latest Arlo Parks album My Soft Machine, providing supporting vocals on the track “Pegasus.”
Parks, who was going for a minimalist “White Ferrari” moment, knew correctly that Bridgers would be a great match for the song. Arlo Parks spoke to Variety about the collaboration:
“I’ve been a fan of Phoebe for so long, since I was 17. We’ve sung together a bunch, and I feel like when our voices come together, they just mesh really naturally. So I sent it to her and was really honest about how much her music meant to me and what the song meant to me, and she said yes.”
The Record dropped in April
Finally, boygenius—the combination of Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers—released their debut album in April of this year. The 12-track album, aptly named The Record, is everything fans wanted from this indie super group and so much more. Imbued with a friendship which naturally bloomed over the course of their collaboration, The Record is both a testament to talent and bond.
So, even though we haven’t received any new solo material from Phoebe Bridgers, The Record has managed to ease the wait. Even though the voices of boygenius stack against each other so wonderfully, Bridgers’ distinct attributes are featured throughout The Record. All three of them are heard at their height and what they do best. Now, Bridgers, Dacus, and Baker are on tour throughout this summer as part of the re:Set Concert Series.
Phoebe Bridgers released a new music video for her new song “Sidelines,” a track she recorded for the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel Conversations With Friends. “Sidelines,” made in collaboration with Marshall Vore and Ruby Rain Henley, is Bridgers’ first new material since 2020’s Punisher. You can check out the “Sidelines” music video, with scenes from the Hulu original, below.
In May of last year, Bridgers dropped her first new material since 2020’s Punisher. “Sidelines,” made in collaboration with Marshall Vore and Ruby Rain Henley, was recorded for the Sally Rooney adaptation Conversations with Friends. In November 2022, she dropped somewhat of a holiday album, the 6-track EP So Much Wine.
With a steady stream of new material, but no new solo album, what can fans expect from Bridgers in 2023? Will Phoebe Bridgers release a new album this year, after all? Here is everything we know.
Is Phoebe Bridgers performing new material on her tour with Boygenius?
So far, the boygenius portion of the re:Set Concert Series hasn’t featured any new Phoebe Bridgers solo material. But we think it could change before the end of the summer. If Phoebe Bridgers releases a new single in these next couple of months, we are certain fans will get to hear it while boygenius are still on the road and performing music festivals.
Check out the boygenius setlist for the majority of re:Set Concert Series shows. It’s the perfect melding of solo material from all three artists, grounded by their collaborative work as boygenius.

Who will appear on the new Phoebe Bridgers album?
So far, Phoebe Bridgers hasn’t dropped many hints about who will appear on her next album. Punisher featured an array from Phoebe Bridgers’ inner circle, such as boygenius bandmates Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. Who do we think Phoebe Bridgers will include on her next new album? Here are, in our opinion, the most likely candidates.
Conor Oberst
In between the release of Stranger in the Alps and Punisher, Phoebe Bridgers formed Better Oblivion Community Center with the one and only Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. Armed with their individual talent, friendship, and a mutual admiration that began in 2016, Bridgers and Oberst created a musical identity through Better Oblivion Community Center that is remarkably different from their solo projects. Clearly, the creativity runs high when these two artists are in the presence of each other. We wouldn’t be surprised if Bridgers taps into it yet again on her upcoming album.
Lucy Dacus
boygenius bandmate and stunning, independent rock musician Lucy Dacus is very likely to appear on Bridgers’ next album. In order to execute some of the beautiful vocal choruses on Punisher, Bridgers enlisted Dacus—namely “Graceland Too” and “I Know The End.”
Julien Baker
It’s been an eventful time since Julien Baker released her debut Sprained Ankle while she was still a student at Middle Tennessee State University. She’s released three solo albums, the last of which—2021’s Little Oblivions—became her first LP to reach Billboard‘s Top 40.
Not to mention earning her place in the supergroup boygenius, as well as accruing a few album credits on Bridgers’ Punisher. Along with Lucy Dacus, we are confident we’ll be hearing Julien Baker’s vocals on Bridgers’ new album.
Arlo Parks
The collaboration between Arlo Parks and Phoebe Bridgers continues in 2023, as Bridgers appeared on Parks’ sophomore album My Soft Machine. The two have performed together in the past, first for BBC and then at Coachella. On their latest, “Pegasus,” Arlo Parks and Phoebe Bridgers prove, yet again, their soft styles mesh so well together. We wouldn’t be surprised, then, if Arlo Parks appears on the new Phoebe Bridgers album. They are, after all, a natural fit we can’t get enough of.
The National
The National’s Matt Berninger had to work through some writer’s block before “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend” could come to be. He elaborated on the process of working with Bridgers on Apple Music 1 with Hanuman Welch:
Well, I had gone over to Phoebe kind of trying to work on songs. We talked about writing songs, and we both write in similar ways, I think. And we’re both fans of the way we write and we talk about how to write and how to write about the things that you hate about yourself, which she’s incredible at. And so after that I was like, “I have to write about this.” Even though I was allergic to myself at the time. I was like, “This is all I can do with this, so I have to write about it.” So when finished the song, I felt it needed, since my wife was a big part of the inspiration, I kind of felt like it needed that a presence of another voice or another person, and Phoebe jumped in, she was just perfect for that. And because her voice is just such a tender, just warm hug and so it added that sort of dimension to it, which was crucial for it to work.
Could the pair have drafted a few other songs while working together? We wouldn’t doubt if, in the process of breaking writer’s block, Bridgers and Berninger came up with much more than “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend.”
Taylor Swift
Phoebe Bridgers opened for Taylor Swift for three nights of her “Eras” Tour. Specifically, her Metlife Stadium shows—some of her best so far. We’re trying not to read too much into it, but then, Taylor Swift performs while wearing the now sold-out Phoebe Bridgers x Catbird necklace collaboration. We wouldn’t be surprised if a deeper bond is forming between the two artists, both known as incredible songwriters in their own right. We are really, really hoping these two are seen together on the next Phoebe Bridgers album.
When will Phoebe Bridgers release her new album?
Though our hunches exist entirely within the realm of optimistic speculation, we don’t think we’ll have to wait too much longer for Phoebe Bridgers’ new album. We wouldn’t be surprised if Bridgers drops the lead single from her third LP late summer or early fall—near the end of her tour with Boygenius.
The new Phoebe Bridgers album is likely to arrive in Fall 2023, but we anticipate many more details coming our way before then. Stay tuned. As soon as Phoebe Bridgers releases more information about her new album, we’ll be there.
