Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl” Was A Dude
Last night, TMZ stalked John Oates in Nashville long enough for him to blurt out a few little-known facts.
Before hightailing it out of the camera’s view as most sane people would do around TMZ, Oates told reporters that the Hall & Oates 1977 hit, “Rich Girl” was actually about a man.
Oates said the song was written by Daryl Hall about a guy who used to date Sara Allen, Hall’s girlfriend at the time. The guy was a spoiled fast food heir and after writing the song, Hall decided that “rich girl” would go over way better than “rich dude.” He was probably right.
And in the spirit of Hall & Oates discoveries, here’s another one to have some fun with- next time you’re feeling down in the dumpster, just call 719-26-OATES (719-266-2837) and the guys will be there on their emergency hotline, Callin’ Oates. Just dial and choose one of the four Hall and Oates hits you’d like to listen to… “One on One,” “Rich Girl,” “Maneater” or “Private Eyes.”
Here’s to making days just a little more shiny with Oates.
In case you were wondering, the iconic duo are still out there performing. Hall performed with Chromeo at Bonnaroo last year and it was one of the best Bonnaroo moments of all time. Hall & Oates tickets to upcoming shows are available now too. If you didn’t already know that Hall & Oates put on a fantastic show, here’s a classic clip of the duo performing, you guessed it, “Rich Girl.”
Try to look at the song the same way now.
