Holiday Gift Ideas for Him (Theatre Edition)
It is November 29. You have 26 days (or fewer!) to buy your holiday presents, but don’t worry. We are here to help you.
If you missed our previous installments, check them out here: Part One (Concert Ideas for Her), Part Two (Theatre Ideas for Her), and Part Three (Concert Ideas for Him). They are full of good fallbacks and great finds for everyone ranging from your crazy niece to your weird uncle (good relatives, too, if you have them).
- Avenue Q – Avenue Q may not seem like the immediate choice for a gift for a guy – particularly if they don’t like musicals. But, this isn’t your ordinary musical. The lyrics are pretty choice (my favorite – a song called, “What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?”). The puppetry is never hokey, and it only ever adds to the hilarity of the show. Just be careful who you take – there is some material not suitable for anyone under 13.
- Glengarry Glen Ross – Glengarry Glen Ross is a play by David Mamet. It features the lives of four Chicago real estate agents who are prepared to engage in unethical, illegal acts to sell undesirable real estate to unknowing prospective buyers. The Broadway run stars Al Pacino. Check out our previous write-up on it here!
- Jersey Boys – Jersey Boys is a great fallback. The songs will make you want to get up and sing with them, no matter how familiar you are with the stylings of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. I’ve never met anyone who’s been dissatisfied with this show, so it’s definitely one that I highly recommend.
- Lucky Guy – Lucky Guy harkens back to the New York City of the 1980’s. Written by Nora Ephron, the play features the story of tabloid columnist Mike McAlary, who won the Pulitzer Prize shortly before his untimely death on Christmas Day, 1998. If that’s not enough to sell you, Tom Hanks is making his Broadway debut in this play as McAlary. Tom Hanks.
- Memphis the Musical – Memphis didn’t win the Tony for Best Musical for nothing. Like Jersey Boys, the show looks back to the good ol’ days, and it takes place in the heart of soul music and soul food – Memphis, Tennessee. It’s based on a true story about a white radio DJ and a black club singer that team up to get a big break and change the world. It’s got a great soundtrack and story, and if you haven’t seen it yet, now’s your chance!
