The Championships, Wimbledon is one of the most prestigious events in all of sports and is without question the biggest tennis tournament in the world. Held annually in Wimbledon, London, England in late June or early July every year, it features the best tennis players in the world who are put to the test on the grass courts of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
(Last year’s Gentlemen’s Final matchup, won by Roger Federer in three sets over Marin Cilic)
With such a major event in the sport comes an extremely high demand for tickets to catch the world’s best players in person. There are a few ways in which fans can secure tickets directly through the venue, though it’s certainly not easy. They are as follows:
Ballot Registration
The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s official website allows fans to register for a Ballot to purchase seats, which is how most tickets for the Centre Court, No. 1 Court, and No. 2 Court are sold. Keep in mind that there are often an extremely high number of applicants who subscribe for the ability to purchase these tickets, so your chances of actually being able to obtain a ticket this way are very slim.
Queue
Another way that tennis fans can try and secure tickets is the old-fashioned way. There are roughly 500 tickets reserved for No. 1 Court, No. 2 Court, and Centre Court (with the exception of the last four days of the tournament). Fans can get in line early at the turnstiles outside of the grounds (you’d be advised to show up at least a few hours prior to the grounds opening at 9:30 am, though there are people who camp out overnight for a better chance). Keep in mind that similar to ticket lotteries for Broadway shows, tickets secured this way are not transferable.
Debentures
Many fans are registered for Debentures, which is something of a Personal Seat License that leagues like the NFL use in order for fans to pay up front in order to have the right to purchase tickets each year. Debenture tickets are for matches at Centre Court and at No. 1 Court, and these are essentially the only tickets available on the secondary market for purchase. Prices will not come cheap, but if you’re willing to spend up to catch the world’s greatest tennis tournament, this is your only option aside from getting tickets directly from the venue.
Secondary Marketplaces
The last resort (and only reasonable option for most fans these days) for fans to turn in order to secure their Wimbledon tickets is to purchase them from sellers who are re-listing their Debentures for sale, which is allowable by the venue and the only form of Wimbledon ticket that can be secured without camping out overnight to get in line for the queue or getting incredibly lucky with the ballot registration process.
Those willing to pay the sometimes exorbitant prices for debentures would want to always check out TickPick for the cheapest Wimbledon tickets on the secondary market, as the prices never tack on any service fees that can amount to hundreds to thousands of dollars in savings per ticket for the fans.
