Is Annie Still Relevant?
Most people remember poignant songs from Annie – “Tomorrow,” “It’s a Hard Knock Life,” and “NYC.” What some forget is that the musical is incredibly political.
It takes place during FDR’s term, just after the 1929 stock market crash when Herbert Hoover left the nation in a heaping mess of homelessness, unemployment, and general despair. Annie manages to cross political lines – inspiring optimism in people in Hoovervilles and republican tycoon Oliver Warbucks. She brings hope to downtrodden people, and… well, all this is sounding familiar.
Annie comes to New York at a great time – just after one of the longest and most memorable election campaigns in recent history, and just before Christmas. It hits home with holiday cheer and the relief of being done with the election simultaneously. If you ask me, no musical is more relevant right now.
If you have children, I highly recommend seeing this on stage. Neither of the movies do it justice. And remember, $2 of your ticket price will be donated to Pedigree – support Sandy!
