James Earl Jones Theatre Seating Chart Information
Unlike the majority of Broadway Theaters, the James Earl Jones Theater does not have obstructed view seats on the sides of the orchestra and mezzanine. However, if any seats are partially obstructed, it will be noted in the listing regardless of where you purchase your The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window tickets. Front Mezzanine A overhangs the Orchestra starting at Row J, and Balcony Row A overhangs at Mezzanine Row B.
The seating at the James Earl Jones Theatre is very tight from seat to seat and does not offer much leg room which is something to be aware of. Aisle seats are definitely worth spending a bit extra on if you can locate them.
What is Gutenberg! The Musical About?
Gutenberg! The Musical is a clever comedy from the same guys who wrote Beetlejuice and the guy who directed Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge (Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells.) It follows two best friends, Bud and Doug, who put on a show together. Essentially, it’s a musical about a musical.
James Earl Jones Theatre Orchestra Seating
Now even though the seats on the far side in the right and left orchestra sections are not obstructed, they still are not optimal to watch the performance. In most cases, I would prefer to sit one row further back in exchange for a seat that is one seat closer to the inside aisle (i.e. I would prefer seat 15 in Row O, verse seat 17 in Row N). The right side of the James Earl Jones Theatre has even seat numbers, and the left side of the theatre has odd numbers. In the center sections, the seat numbers are consecutive.
James Earl Jones Theatre Mezzanine Seating
Some frequent theater attendees will tell you that they prefer the first row in the Mezzanine to seats down at the orchestra level. That may hold true for the James Earl Jones Theatre since the venue is so small and as noted above, the Mezzanine level overhangs at Orchestra Row J. Our customers have not complained about the height of the railing in this level being too high, as it can be in other venues.
Also unlike many Broadway theaters, the very sides of the Mezzanine are not obstructed and could prove to be the best-valued tickets for Gutenberg! The Musical.
James Earl Jones Theatre Balcony Seating
The Balcony level at the James Earl Jones Theatre is stadium seating, so you won’t have an issue with your view from the person sitting in front of you. The height of the railing on the Balcony level should not obstruct your view of the stage either.
The sides of the Balcony level still provide solid views of the stage, but in comparison to the rest of the seats, these are the least desirable. That being said they are aisle seats so they do provide some added space/legroom. Finally, you do need to climb 4 flights of stairs to get up to the Balcony Level, so if stairs aren’t your thing you are better off in the Mezzanine or Orchestra.
When buying tickets directly from the NY box office your seat numbers will often be numbered. But for privacy purposes, tickets reselling on sites like StubHub don’t have to state their seat numbers (only row and section). For this reason, I don’t recommend buying tickets in the Orchestra Right or Orchestra Left for Rows BB-G on secondary ticket marketplaces (Ticketmaster and Telecharge are okay). Here, you would run the risk of purchasing tickets with very obstructed views, taking away from the experience of seeing what’s up on stage. If the prices seem too good to be true, they probably are.
James Earl Jones Theatre Seating Reviews
Here are a few of the more helpful reviews I found:
Yelp:
“I’ve been to at least 4 other theaters on Broadway and thought this was a more intimate experience. My husband and I bought tickets last minute for Fish in the Dark and the seats were located on the balcony in the last row/aisle. In other theaters, that would be a disaster, but at this one, it was still a great seat. We didn’t miss a thing in the show.
Further, there is a bathroom right by the back row, so we had quick access at intermission (note: women’s restroom on that floor had only 2 tiny toilets, so a long line developed).
Also, I’m glad shows now allow you to bring drinks to your seats, as long as they have a lid. They only had 1 white wine option and one red option, but they were decent wines. Plus, they let you get a double pour (yes, I partook).”
Yelp 3/26/2014
“At first glance, you can tell that the Cort Theater is pretty old but I think it adds to its charm.
We had mid-balcony seats and we could see everything perfectly fine. I seriously don’t think there’s a bad seat in the entire theater! There was very little legroom but it’s definitely not as bad as nosebleed seats for Phantom, where I started getting a leg cramp halfway through. All of us were 5’8″ and under so it was fine for us but if you’re a really tall person, I don’t suggest balcony seats.
Since the Cort is smaller than other theaters in the area, the bathrooms are also very small. Each bathroom has 2 stalls so the lines can get pretty long during intermission. At some point, the men’s bathroom line was even longer than the females because of the lack of urinals. Be sure to go before the show and try to hold on until after the show because we barely made it back to our seats before the 2nd act started!
Alcoholic drinks are standard pricing for all theaters – a small for $15 and a large for $25. Beers are $13 but they all do come with a reusable cup. If you bring your cup back during intermission for a second drink, you’ll most likely get a discount.”
