Nederlander Theatre History and Overview

Over the years, the David T. Nederlander Theatre has gone by different names like the National, the Billy Rose, and the Trafalgar. It’s a tribute to the Nederlander Family’s patriarch, who now represents the third generation running many of America’s top theaters and concert venues.

This theater was built in 1921 and has hosted famous plays like Cyrano de Bergerac, Private Lives, Julius Caesar, King Lear, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. One of its notable moments was when Lena Horne performed “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music,” earning her a special Tony Award.

Located in the Times Square Theatre District, it was the ideal spot for Jonathan Larson’s Rent, inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme. The theater’s appearance both inside and out was designed to capture the feel of a lively downtown nightclub.

Right now, you can see the show Redwood at the Nederlander Theatre, which has 1,232 seats and is one of nine Broadway theaters owned by The Nederlander Organization.
