Texas begins its season against Rice University on September 2nd, 2023, while Oklahoma will be playing its first game on the same day versus Arkansas State. Texas and Oklahoma will have their long-awaited matchup on October 7th, 2023.

Texas Longhorns Background
The Texas Longhorns’ incredible legacy began when they took to the field for the first time in 1893. Over the years, college football has become an integral part of the culture at the University of Texas at Austin (or just “UT” for those in the know).
It took some time for UT to settle on its team’s permanent name. For many years, the team was simply known as “varsity” or “the Steers.” In 1913, the team officially started being known as the Longhorns.
Multiple Heisman winners have traveled through the Horns’ hallowed halls. Running backs Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams have both won the trophy and secured their place in football history.
Oklahoma Sooners Background
The OU Sooners have won an impressive seven national championships since their humble beginnings in 1895. They lost their first game by a whopping 34 points but have become one of the most decorated teams in the entire NCAA.
They chose the name “Sooners” in 1908 as a playful nod to Oklahoma’s recent history. People who fled to Oklahoma (which was about to earn its statehood) before their designated time became known as “Sooners.”
As opposed to the Longhorns’ two Heisman winners, the Sooners have accumulated seven.
What Is the Big 12?
Since 1996, the Sooners and the Longhorns have been part of the prestigious Big 12 Conference, a group of Division One teams who often play one another. Some other prominent teams in the Big 12 include:
- Baylor Bears
- Iowa State Cyclones
- Kansas State Wildcats
- Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs
- Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Oklahoma State Cowboys
- West Virginia Mountaineers
Starting in 2024, the Texas Longhorns will be making a historic jump to a new organization, the Southeastern Conference. Interestingly enough, the Oklahoma Sooners have also made the choice to leave the Big 12 and instead join the SEC in 2024.
This will help keep the two teams’ rivalry alive but will likely deal a serious blow to the Big 12. That said, the Big 12 will gain a few new members to compensate for the substantial loss.
History of the Rivalry
Whether you call it “the Red River Showdown,” “the Red River Shootout,” or “the Red River Rivalry,” this historic matchup has been going strong since their first game in 1900. In 1929, the two teams decided to make their rivalry official. They started to meet annually and have totaled 118 games played against one another.
UT has an impressive 63 wins, whereas Oklahoma has a respectable 50, and there have been five ties over the years.
The Year Ahead
In 2023, fans are expecting a blowout matchup between the Longhorns’ quarterback, Quinn Ewers, and Oklahoma’s, Dillon Gabriel. The game will also be a showdown between UT head coach Steve Sarkisian and OU head coach Brent Venables.
Rather than playing at either Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, TX where the Longhorns play their home games, or Memorial Stadium, home of Oklahoma Sooners football in Norman, OK, games between the two teams take place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
The Teams’ Other Notable Rivalries
UT vs. Texas A&M
Texas football fans wait all year for this game to kick off. When UT and Texas A&M first played in 1894, UT had a resounding win. Texas A&M has been fighting back ever since.
Oklahoma vs. Nebraska
While the rivalry between OU and the Nebraska Cornhuskers has been put to bed, it still earns a place in college football history. The results of this matchup often dictated which team would continue on to the Orange Bowl.
