The Decemberists Announce New Album ‘I’ll Be Your Girl’

Portland native indie-rock outfit The Decemberists have led quite the 17-year career, sprawling from ambitious folk to experimental rock opera. Now, the band has announced that their eighth studio album, titled I’ll Be Your Girlwill arrive on March 16th.

In addition to announcing a new album, The Decemberists have also dropped the I’ll Be Your Girl lead single, “Severed“. This track backs up lead singer Colin Meloy’s statement regarding the upcoming album’s diversity from other fixtures from their discography. “So our ambition this time was really just to get out of our comfort zone. That’s what prompted working with a different producer and using a different studio. We wanted to free ourselves from old patterns and give ourselves permission to try something different.”

Check out the synth-driven “Severed” below.

Severed” is a shining example of the busy, electro-experimental pop sound The Decemberists achieved by enlisting John Congleton as their producer for I’ll Be Your Girl. And if “Severed” shows us anything, it’s that The Decemberists are a perfect fit for this type of music. Whether the rest of I’ll Be Your Girl will stand up to this incredible lead single remains to be seen as more songs roll out in the coming months. You can check out the full I’ll Be Your Girl track list below.
