The Nationals make history!
It is a grand tradition that, at a Nationals home game in the middle of the fourth inning, Nationals Park hosts a presidential race. Literally. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt have been running competitively since 2006. Good old Teddy Roosevelt has lost the last 534 races, but remarkably, yesterday afternoon, he finally won one.
In the past, Teddy has lost in various ways (including one very memorable loss during Shark Week this year). He has cut corners, he has used a segway, and everyone knows that he fights dirty. Due to immense fan support over the past years, it was nice to see the underdog win yesterday. But not everything is in the clear for Mr. Rough Rider…
Now that Teddy has finally won his first race, there are rumors that the Nats will be retiring him, potentially to be replaced with John F. Kennedy. A grassroots movement to keep him around has, of course, already started. The rumor, for now, seems to be just that: a rumor, and that’s good news, because I don’t think he’s going to be winning again anytime soon.
