Halsey is the stage name of New York’s Ashley Frangipane. In true hipster fashion, the New Jersey native took the name of a Brooklyn L train stop to use as her musical alias. She self-released her first single, “Ghost,” and based on the strength and popularity of that song alone she signed a deal with Capitol Records-owned electronic/dance label Astralwerks in 2014. Currently, the young singer is burning up the charts with her newly-released debut album Badlands, which dropped in at #2 on the Billboard 200.

Chicago’s Chancelor Bennett, a.k.a. Chance the Rapper, made his breakthrough with the release of his 2013 mixtape Acid Rap, which has since been downloaded over 900,000 times. The mixtape featured the likes of Childish Gambino, Ab-Soul, and Action Bronson, and received high praise from major critics from Rolling Stone, Spin, Pitchfork, and NPR among others. Thus far, the 22-year-old rapper has only released a few mixtapes, yet he has earned a high enough profile to be a headliner at some festivals this year. Minus the Bear has a lot of fantastic song titles as well, such as “Pantsuit…Uggghhh,” “Monkey!!!Knife!!!Fight!!!” and “Hey! Is That a Ninja Up There?” among others. Though the wacky song titles might suggest otherwise, Minus the Bear’s tunes are actually quite refined and expertly arranged, and it’s obvious that the band takes their music seriously.

Desaparecidos formed in 2000 as the side project of Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst. The name is Spanish for “disappeared ones,” taken from the 1970s practice of forced disappearance by South American governments. Much like the band’s namesake, Desaparecidos’ lyrics often focus on themes of loss. Oberst announced the group’s disbandment in in 2002 due to the increasing success of Bright Eyes, but the band officially reunited ten years later. As of 2015, Desaparecidos is signed to Epitaph Records and just released a new album titled Payola.

Ska-punk band Sublime was without a doubt one of the biggest acts of the ’90s, but the group unfortunately met an early demise with the untimely death of frontman Bradley Nowell. The group’s surviving members initially carried on by forming the Long Beach Dub All-Stars, but returned to the Sublime catalog in 2009 when they collaborated with singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez to form what is now called Sublime with Rome. The group originally just played Sublime songs before signing with Fueled By Ramen and releasing their debut album, Yours Truly, in 2011. The band’s live shows now feature a mix of new, original material and old Sublime favorites.

Formed in 1993, indie rock band Modest Mouse would grow to become one of the most successful acts of the 2000s. The band released a few albums before really hitting it big with their 2004 commercial breakthrough Good News For People Who Love Bad News. For their next album, 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, they recruited former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to record with them. Marr eventually became a full member of the band, touring in support of the record, although he ultimately left shortly afterward to join The Cribs. Modest Mouse underwent a bit of a lull in activity since then, other than releasing an EP in 2009 and playing a few shows here and there. However, the band came back in full force in 2014, issuing the single “Lampshades On Fire” ahead of their long-awaited sixth album, Strangers to Ourselves. The new album is the band’s first full-length since ’07, but it is proving to have been worth the wait.

On Tuesday, June 23, legendary rock band Rush is making a stop at Boston’s TD Garden as part of their R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour. After some hesitation as to whether or not they would tour this year, the band decided to give it a go, and their 2015 tour is now underway. Celebrating 40 years as a band, Rush will be playing hits from their extensive catalog that spans the last four decades. The band announced that this will be their last tour of this magnitude, so now may be your last chance to see them!
