Blood Orange Drops Two New Tracks for Black History Month

Dev Hynes has returned to his famous moniker Blood Orange to drop two new tracks in honor of Black History Month. According to his Instagram post which subtly announced the two new tracks, neither song will make it onto his forthcoming album. Check out “Christopher & 6th” and “June 12th” below.

The two tracks, collated on a playlist titled ‘Black History’, both share commonalities with his 2016 release, Freetown Sound. “Christopher & 6th” is a mellow, soulful smattering, while “June 12th” uses higher production to pull off his darkly grooving cacophony of sound. Both songs discuss identity, connecting them to the larger occasion of celebrating Black History Month.

‘Black History’ comes not too long after Hynes has taken to Instagram to periodically post cryptic messages, all of which have suggested a fourth Blood Orange album on the way. Months ago, Hynes spoke to Noisey about his upcoming project, and said that it would focus on his experiences as a young, black man in England.

Very little is known about Hynes’ upcoming album, but we know he’s been very busy in the interim since Freetown Sound. From scoring films to appearing on Clavin Klein ads with Kelela and Solange to collaborating with Girlpool, Hynes has been right there, in the thick of everything.

We anticipate to hear more about the new Blood Orange album in the near future, and hope that the arrival of ‘Back History’ bodes well for more new music soon. For those of you who live in the D.C area, Dev Hynes will be in concert with Philip Glass at the Kennedy Center next month.
