Listen to Lorde’s New Song ‘Sober’

June 9, 2017 by

We’re nearing the date Lorde fans have been waiting for. On June 16th, the New Zealand singer-songwriter will drop her highly anticipated sophomore album, MelodramaSo far, the album has been preceded by three singles, the crescendoing lead single “Green Light“, the vulnerable, masterpiece ballad “Liability“, and “Perfect Places“, the song that most resembles what Lorde put forth in Pure Heroine, but is unmistakably elevated in its production. Now, Lorde is out with her fourth Melodrama single just a week ahead of its release. Check out “Sober” below:

In a series of tweets early this morning, Lorde explained the meaning and making behind “Sober”. Like much of Melodrama, the song’s inspiration took place in the presence of Jack Antonoff, who was “wordlessly guided by [her] hands” to the chords that eventually wove the fabric for “Sober”. Characterized by its slow burning bass and strange vocal syncopations, Lorde has clearly made a pop song unlike any other, one she can truly be proud of as it makes its way onto charts and radio play.

The song’s meaning resonates with the rest of Melodrama, an album which speaks to the vulnerability and spontaneity of living in New York in your 20’s, of getting the most out of life even when you know that there is considerable risk in doing so. Lorde’s matured lens, one that was evident back when she hailed in from New Zealand and took the pop music industry by storm, allows her music to illustrate the limelight while standing outside of it. Even though her songs will be played in clubs, bars, and appear on Summer party playlists, Lorde’s perspective remains acutely aware of the emotional undercurrents of living ones life to the fullest.

“Sober” doesn’t disappoint, and like the other tracks we have from Melodrama, it shows us Lorde has maintained her observational eye while experiencing the full breadth of her 20’s. Melodrama, due out June 16th, will definitely worth the wait.
