Masters Tournament History

The Masters Tournament first began in 1934, two years after the purchase of Augusta National Golf Club, formerly the Fruitland Nurseries. Before it opened for play in 1932, Dr. Alister Mackenzie was the architect of the golf course. The first Masters Tournament winner was Horton Smith, who also became the tournament’s first two-time winner.

The early Masters Tournament was not as popular as it is today. For a while, the Augusta National Golf Club struggled financially due to the effects of the Great Depression. Over time, the tournament grew in popularity with a 1956 tournament broadcast on CBS. The CBS broadcast brought some 10 million people to the event via television even though the first Masters only had a total of six stationary cameras to record the event and covered about two hours of the final days, including an hour on Sunday.

Over the next several years, the tournament saw the rise of famous golfers Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player. With the tournament’s rapid growth in popularity, the first waitlist to obtain a series badge opened up.

Daily Tournament Tickets

Daily Tournament tickets are single-day passes only that are good for one of the four days over which the tournament occurs.

There are a limited number of Daily Tournament tickets available. Daily Tournament tickets have an application period that opens several months before the next tournament.

The application deadline usually falls about eight months before the start of the tournament. Applicants that are chosen get notified about a month or so after the deadline. The deadline for the daily pass 2024 Masters Tournament falls on June 20.

Practice Round Tickets

Practice Round tickets are daily passes valid only for one of the three designated practice days: Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. At the age of 17, Scottie Scheffler won the US Junior Amateur, earning him his first invitation to a PGA Tour event. He also represented the United States at the 2017 Walker Cup alongside other top professional golfers.

Hideki Matsuyama

Hideki Matsuyama won the 2021 Masters Tournament, becoming not only another Augusta National Club Champion but also the first Japanese male golfer to win the title. Hideki Matsuyama went professional in 2013 and quickly established himself as one of the world’s top professional golfers. He represented the international team in the Presidents Cup for five years, the last time being in 2022.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson was the winner of the Masters Tournament in 2020, adding that title to the numerous ones that he accumulated over the course of his career. Johnson also has at least one PGA Tour victory over the course of 14 seasons, matching Tiger Woods’ record. Johnson also represented the United States in several championship games, including the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods won the Masters Tournament in 2019. Among professional golfers, the name Tiger Woods is one of the most recognized by both those who are fans of golf and those who are not. Tiger Woods holds one of the top records for most USGA Championships held, along with Jack Nicklaus and JoAnne Gunderson Carner. Tiger Woods broke many records over the course of his career, including being the youngest to win the US Junior at 15 years old.
