Sexy and modern, eerie and whimsical, Moulin Rouge! is more than Broadway bound, it’s destined to become a major theater attraction. Beginning June 28 Moulin Rouge! will reside at the Al Hirschfeld Theater, with opening night set for July 25. The Al Hirschfeld Theater is currently home to Kinky Bootswhich will be ending its Broadway run on April 7th.

In 2001, Baz Luhrmann released a heart-wrenching tale told with sexy and stunning theatrics. Taking place in a Montmartre nightclub, Moulin Rouge! is known for its flashy choreography, dazzling costumes, romantic narratives, and opulently adorned rooms. So what better place for Moulin Rouge! than the Broadway stage?

Last Summer, Moulin Rouge! The Musical celebrated its official opening at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre, where it ran shows through August 19th. Moulin Rouge! marked the return of a tradition of Broadway shows playing out-of-town tryout engagements at the Colonial, which served as the birthplace of such musicals as Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun, and Follies.

This Broadway engagement stars Aaron Tveit as Christian—a struggling composer in Paris—and Karen Olivo as Satine, a cabaret performer. Both actors are respectively reprising their roles from the Boston run. Six-time Tony nominee Danny Burstein is the cabaret’s host, while Tam Mutu acts as the Duke of Monroth, and the brilliant Sahr Ngaujah as Toulouse-Lautrec.

Moulin Rouge! comes to Broadway with the help of director Alex Timbers, choreographer Sonya Tayeh, and Tony-winning writer John Logan, whose score includes some of the most memorable pop hits featured in the movie, along with more recent songs by artists like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and OutKast.

Considering this story bridges several age gaps and demographics by virtue of being a film, we think Moulin Rouge! Tickets are likely to go fast, and the prices to become astronomical, quickly. But when it comes to ticket fees, and the expensive nature of Broadway, TickPick continues to be one of the most fair and reliable sources for theater enthusiasts. Even though Moulin Rouge! will be big-budget, that doesn’t mean it can’t fit yours. And we’re here to help make it happen.
