The Weeknd New Album Review

September 6, 2013 by

23 year old Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd, is releasing his first solo debut album on September 10th. The album titled “Kiss Land” will coincide with the launch of his fall tour—appropriately named “The Fall Tour”. The Weeknd will be kicking off his tour in Vancouver. You can still buy The Weeknd Tickets at TickPick.com! Listen to the full album on NPR: First Listen: The Weeknd’s “Kiss Land”

Abel Tesfaye has always been somewhat of a mystery in the music industry, never being quite straightforward when it comes to marketing his music. In 2010, Abel Tesfaye uploaded three songs, “Loft Music”, “What You Need”, and “The Morning”, to YouTube under the name The Weeknd. Even though his identity was unknown, the songs created a buzz by word of mouth, and by the promotion of fellow Toronto-based rapper Drake. In 2011, Tesfaye released three mix-tapes on his website, which were followed by buzz and growing interest. Through his journey of music production and widespread recognition, The Weeknd largely refuses to give interviews, restricting his way of communication primarily to Twitter and other social media websites. But by listening to The Weeknd’s new album “Kiss Land”, the secretive nature leading up to now is overall misleading. Abel Tesfaye has a lot to say following his first encounters with fame—and “Kiss Land” is his way of telling it.

“Kiss Land” is a record, or representation, of The Weeknd’s tour life. It’s a compilation of tracks which explain everything that has happened to him since his first venture into music production—everything he had never experienced up until two years ago. But the album is notably dark, a manifesto about the truth behind being famous. This begins with the albums first line: “It’s ideal, you need someone to tell you how to feel”. The Weeknd’s new album personifies the anxiety and loss of control that often comes with fame. In the music video for “Belong to the World”, The Weeknd is trapped in this dark, mysterious dystopia. But the sound itself is cinematic; listeners are compelled to enter his world. “Kiss Land” also features collaboration with Drake for the track titled “Live For”. The song is provocative—but not for the usual reasons. The two artists give an honest verse of what it means to give up everything you have in order to make music. “Live For” is just one of the many confessional tracks on The Weeknd’s new album.

The Weeknd’s new album is set to release alongside the beginning of his tour. “The Fall Tour” is being heavily anticipated all over North America due to his standout performances in the past two years. For his first full length tour, The Weeknd has leaked a teaser video of the set design he has in store for his fans.

The Weeknd’s fall tour will be something you don’t want to miss. With incredible light shows, trippy graphics, and the tantalizing vocals of Abel Tesfaye, this upcoming tour is one you’ll want to be a part of. The Weeknd tickets are still available for purchase, and tour dates are as follows:
