About Metallica
Metallica got its start in 1981 in Los Angeles, California, thanks to co-founders James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. They were later joined by lead guitarist Kirk Hammett Hetfield grew up in Downey, California, in a devout Christian household. He always felt like an outcast due to his inability to relate to the religion the way his parents did. After his father left the family, his mother died from cancer when Hetfield was 16.
Born in Denmark in 1963, Lars Ulrich moved to the United States when he was 15. Initially, the plan was to train in tennis as he had in Denmark, but he soon grew tired of it and found himself falling behind. He decided to pursue music after his family moved to Newport Beach, California.
Interested in starting a band, Ulrich placed an ad in a newspaper that made its way to Hetfield. They soon got together to look for other bandmates. The second guitarist, Dave Mustaine, joined around 1981, and in 1982, Hetfield and Ulrich recruited bass player Cliff Burton. Burton tragically died in Sweden in 1986 when the band’s tour bus crashed.
The band, along with some others of its time like Megadeth, brought thrash onto the heavy metal scene. The band’s visceral sound on albums like Master of Puppets, Kill ‘em All, and Ride the Lightning found a place within many homes across the world, making them one of the most commercially successful bands on par with the selling power of Bruce Springsteen and Jay Z.
Since the ‘90s, every new album has claimed the number-one spot on the Billboard 200. They’ve surpassed other similar groups like Pantera, Ice Nine Kills, and Five Finger Death Punch in terms of commercial and critical success, making them one of the most famous bands in any genre of all time. That’s why they’ve been able to pull off two-night back-to-back performances in major US cities like Seattle or Minneapolis.
