Cardi B Talks Getting Paid, Returns to Mixtape Roots in “Money”
Cardi B, once a herald of the Bronx, has now spent some time amongst rap royalty and has even earned herself a crown. From the “Bodak Yellow” wave, to the release of her first studio LP Invasion of Privacy, Cardi B has maintained that the best business to be in, is the business of the self.
Last summer’s release positioned Cardi to break several records, such as on Sept. 25, 2017, when Cardi was the first solo female rapper to take the top spot since Lauryn Hill with “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998. Now, we have the first new single since Invasion of Privacy. “Money” is as brutal, confident, and brash as we could expect from Cardi at this point, when she has finally reaped the rewards of her hard work.
“Cardi at the tip-top, b**** / Kiss the ring and kick rocks, sis.”
Check out the intimidating reminder of Cardi’s reign below.
“Sweet like a honey bun, spit like a Tommy gun / Rollie a one of one, come get your mommy some,” Cardi spits in the second verse. Though the production is spare, the beat a little tired, Cardi’s assertive nature comes through loud and clear. And even if “Money” doesn’t experience quite the same chart climb as her previous singles, the new track shows us that Cardi remains consistently brutal in her verses and delivery.
Cardi is a mother now, after all, and she knows what her baby needs. Will Cardi B release another full album in 2019? We think “Money” is a sign of good things to come. In the mean time, do not sleep on this video of Cardi B as the ASMRist we all deserve.
