2015 Lineup
Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, better known as Kendrick Lamar, is a rapper and songwriter from Compton, California. He rose to popularity in 2010 with the release of his mixtape “Overly Dedicated,” and the following year his album “Section 80,” which he released exclusively through iTunes, ranked as one of the best digital hip hop releases of the year. His major-label debut “good kid, m.A.A.d city” debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. He received seven Grammy nominations in 2014, including Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Best Rap Song.
The Black Keys
Blues rock aficionados The Black Keys, led by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, have established themselves as one of the biggest rock bands of this generation. The band has won seven Grammy Awards since 2011 and racked up three more nominations this year, so they are without a doubt living up to their rock star status. Their latest album, “Turn Blue,” came out in 2014 and is their fourth consecutive record produced by Danger Mouse. After extensive touring in support of the album over the last year, The Black Keys will surely be ready to rock the main stage at Pemberton this summer.
J. Cole
As the first artist signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, rapper J. Cole was surely the subject of much attention in 2011. That year, the label released his debut album, “Cole World: The Sideline Story,” which debuted at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200. He followed that up in 2013 with his equally successful, chart-topping sophomore record “Born Sinner.” This past fall, J. Cole dropped his highly anticipated third album, “2014 Forest Hills Drive,” which again debuted atop the Billboard 200, making it his third consecutive #1 album. Though it has only been out for a few months, the record has already been certified platinum.
Tiesto
Dutch DJ/producer Tiesto is indisputably one of the biggest names in EDM. He has established himself as one of the world’s foremost DJs, having released several chart-topping hits and receiving a number of awards and honors, including a Grammy Award. He built up his popularity with his famed six-hour solo live sets, which caused the world to take notice of his skill and led to him becoming one of the most sought-after DJs and remixers.
Hozier
Andrew Hozier-Byrne, a.k.a. Hozier, is an Irish singer-songwriter who has gained tremendous success recently with his gospel and blues-inspired single “Take Me to Church.” The wise-beyond-his-years twenty-something singer grew up as the son of a blues musician, so it’s no wonder he adds that influence to his music and does it so well. He released his self-titled debut album near the end of 2014, and his song “Take Me to Church” was nominated for a Grammy award for Song of the Year.
Kid Cudi
Kid Cudi burst onto the hip hop scene with his 2008 hit single “Day ‘n’ Nite.” Born Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, he grew up in Cleveland, Ohio before moving to Brooklyn to pursue his rapping career. There, he hooked up with A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs’ label Fool’s Gold and released his debut EP, which contained his breakout single and launched him to fame. Cudi dropped his latest album in early 2014, and his next record is expected out sometime this year.
Missy Elliott
Arguably the most successful female rapper out there, Missy Elliott has achieved an unparalleled superstar status over the years. Huge turn-of-the-century hits like “Work It” and “Get Ur Freak On” would help her become the best-selling female rapper of her time, with six platinum albums to her name. Though nowadays she may be overshadowed by newcomers like Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, let’s not forget that Miss E has five Grammy Awards on them, so these newbies have some catching up to do. 2015 has already been pretty big for Missy Elliott. So far this year, she appeared in the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show in history alongside Katy Perry and collaborated with Skrillex and Diplo’s Jack U project. Now she’s at work on a Pharrell-produced comeback album, which will be her first record since 2005’s “The Cookbook.”
Weezer
In the post-grunge era of the 1990s, few bands emerged as successful as Weezer. The endearingly nerdy rockers emerged onto the scene in 1994 with the release of their now multi-platinum debut album, which included such timeless singles as “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain’t So.” With several more critically acclaimed albums and a number of chart-topping hits over the last two decades, Weezer is without a doubt one of the most successful bands of the modern era. Weezer’s latest album, “Everything Will Be Alright in the End,” dropped last year and debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, proving that they’re still just as relevant 20 years into their career.
Jane’s Addiction
During the band’s beginnings in the late 1980s, Jane’s Addiction piqued the interest of several record labels before signing with Warner Bros. in 1988. That year they released their debut studio album, “Nothing’s Shocking.” The album did well enough, but its 1990 follow-up, “Ritual de lo Habitual,” was the band’s real commercial breakthrough. After releasing the record, the band went on an extensive tour, which included a headlining performance at the first-ever Lollapalooza festival, which was famously co-founded by the group’s frontman Perry Farrell. Jane’s Addiction has had its ups, downs, breakups and reunions over the years, but nonetheless came back strong in 2011 to release their latest album, “The Great Escape Artist.” Though they have only released four studio albums to date, Jane’s Addiction has still established a lasting legacy as one of the most influential alternative rock bands of the late twentieth century.

Passion Pit
Passion Pit began as the solo project of musician Michael Angelakos. What started as a Valentine’s Day gift for his girlfriend at the time eventually became his debut EP, “Chunk of Change.” The record’s catchy electronic indie pop songs, particularly the standout track “Sleepyhead,” caught the attention of Frenchkiss Records, who re-released the EP and put out Angelakos’ two subsequent records. Now a full-fledged band, Passion Pit has become one of the most commercially successful indie acts of the last few years. Her highly anticipated follow-up album “Kala” came in 2007 and brought her into the mainstream with its catchy, Clash-sampling lead single “Paper Planes.” M.I.A. brings a mix of just about every genre into her music: electro, reggae, hip hop, rap, and a myriad of world music styles, and combines it all with political lyrics and captivating storytelling.
