Austin City Limits History and Info
The first Austin City Limits Festival kicked off in 2002, with a total of 67 performers performing across five stages in Zilker Park over a single weekend. Terry Lickona, the producer of the KLRU/PBS television music series “Austin City Limits,” wanted a festival that was all about the city of Austin and about experiencing quality music while having a good time.
Among the festival’s first music acts were Asleep At the Wheel and The String Cheese Incident. The first festival generated a crowd of about 40,000, which was about 20,000 more people than the organizers expected.
Austin City Limits Festival went through several changes in 2013 after 11 years in operation. The event organizers changed the dates of the festival to occur in October and expanded it to the two-weekend format that we know today. That year featured massive names in the music world, including the Foo Fighters, The Cure, Billie Eilish, and more.
The success of this festival makes sense — after all, it’s produced by C3 Presents, the same company that puts together Lollapalooza.
The festival maintained its success and grew to a whopping 75,000 people per day across its two weekends. These days, the festival includes a number of amenities for its attendees, both VIP and GA tickets, including a number of great grub options in the food court.
From vegan to hot dogs, you’ll be able to find something for you, which is a far cry from the inaugural festival that only had a few options. The festival also has additional offerings for VIP ticket holders.
