The Bucks joined the NBA in 1968 as an expansion team. Their fortunes quickly changed when they drafted Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), who would help the franchise win their first NBA title in 1971. Milwaukee spent the 1980s as perennial contenders in the Eastern Conference, led by stars Sidney Moncrief, Marques Johnson, Paul Pressey, Ricky Pierce, and Terry Cummings. The Bucks struggled for much of the 1990s, before the arrival of the “big three” of Ray Allen, Sam Cassell, and Glenn Robinson and head coach George Karl changed their fortunes. Following the breakup of that team, the franchise struggled through years of losing and mediocrity. The Bucks climbed to their second championship in 2021 after building around Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA MVP who the team drafted in 2013. The Bucks have won two NBA championships. Led by Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, and Bob Dandridge, Milwaukee defeated the Baltimore Bullets (now the Washington Wizards) just three years after joining the league as an expansion team. Fifty years later, Giannis Antetokounmpo, with a supporting cast featuring Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday, defeated the Phoenix Suns to win the 2020-21 championship.
The Bucks have a longstanding rivalry with the Chicago Bulls, owing to proximity and sharing the same division. Milwaukee also had intense playoff battles in the 1980s with the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers (their most frequent postseason opponent). More recently, the Bucks and Miami Heat have sparked up a rivalry, with the franchises meeting in the past two playoffs.
Two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo had one of the best postseason runs in NBA history, leading the Bucks to their first NBA championship in 50 years. Flanked by Olympians (and gold medal winners) Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday, Milwaukee will be seeking a repeat title run. A strong supporting cast features Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, Pat Connaughton, and Donte DiVincenzo. The Bucks also added veterans George Hill and Rodney Hood in free agency and traded for guard Grayson Allen.
Mike Budenholzer enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. Budenholzer, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, guided the Bucks to an NBA championship last season, Milwaukee's first title since 1971.
